In December 1985, Ricky Nelson was preparing for a performance in Dallas, Texas. He and his sons, Matthew and Gunnar, were supposed to fly together to the event, but something unexpected happened.

According to Gunnar, Ricky had a strange feeling before the trip and made a sudden decision to not fly with them. He called his sons just days before the flight, informing them that they would not be joining him. The premonition turned out to be life-saving.

Ricky boarded the ill-fated DC-3 plane in Alabama, which had reportedly experienced engine trouble just days before. Tragically, a fire broke out on the plane as it neared its destination, filling the cabin with smoke. Ricky Nelson and the other passengers, including his girlfriend, Helen Blaine, were killed, but the pilot was able to land the plane safely in Texas.

The cause of the fire remains a mystery to this day, but it’s widely believed that a mechanical issue may have been to blame. Ricky’s daughter Tracy Nelson later explained that the plane, nicknamed the “Flying Bus,” had a known history of problems with its gasoline heater, which could have caused the blaze.
