A father of four tragically lost his life after being trapped under a sand dune that collapsed while he was digging at Muriwai Beach, near Auckland, New Zealand. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday, August 23, as 28-year-old Kane Watson was enjoying a day at the beach with his 18-month-old daughter and three stepsons.
A Family Day Turned Tragic
Watson, who was expecting a new baby with his partner, was playing in the sand with his children when the dune unexpectedly collapsed. He was buried headfirst, and, despite desperately calling for help, Watson remained trapped for 15 minutes. His children quickly sought help from witnesses nearby.
Emergency rescue teams arrived on the scene, and Watson was freed from the sand. He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he tragically passed away the next day, Sunday, August 24.

The Danger of Sand Dunes
Following the incident, Colin Whittaker, a University of Auckland lecturer, spoke to RNZ about the dangers of sand dunes. He warned:
“If you’ve got a big dune above you and a lot of that collapses, you’ve potentially got something that weighs as much as an elephant collapsing on top of you.”
Whittaker explained how difficult it is to dig someone out of a collapsed sand dune. “As soon as you start trying to dig someone out, the sand fills it back in. It’s incredibly challenging to do,” he added.
Kane Watson’s Legacy and Heartbroken Family

In a Givealittle fundraising page set up by a family friend, Watson was described as a “much-loved son, brother, partner, and devoted father.” The page highlighted his love for his children, noting how he cherished spending time with them, including his stepchildren, whom he loved as his own.
“Family was always at the very center of who he was,” wrote family friend Kristalle Tayler. “His greatest joy was being with his children.”
The fundraiser also revealed the heartbreaking fact that Watson’s youngest child, who was due early next year, will never get to meet their father but will grow up hearing stories of him.
Watson’s sister, Shaquille, shared her devastation with local outlet Stuff, describing her brother as her “best friend, my favorite person.”
“He was just an amazing dad,” Tayler said, “All he ever wanted was to have his own family, and it really does feel like the minute he got there, it was ripped away from him.”
