Michelle’s Initial Skepticism and the First Encounter
In the summer of 1989, Michelle was a first-year associate at a law firm in Chicago when she was assigned to mentor a Harvard Law student intern—Barack Obama. At the time, Barack was older and had taken time off from school. Michelle, initially unimpressed by the buzz surrounding him, described herself as skeptical. “I knew of him. This Barack Obama, and everybody was abuzz about him,” Michelle shared, noting that the partners at the law firm were all talking about this “hotshot first-year Harvard Law student.”

Despite hearing rave reviews, Michelle found herself unimpressed by his profile and background. She admitted, “I thought he was going to be ‘weird,’ a nerd, and didn’t see the appeal.” Yet, she was assigned to advise him, which meant scheduling a phone call.

The Moment That Changed Everything
When Michelle first spoke to Barack over the phone, everything changed. “The first kind of sparky feeling I felt actually was when I talked to him on the phone,” she confessed. “He had his Barack Obama voice. He’s like, ‘Hello.’ The voice was sexier than the image that I had about him. So I was sort of like, ‘Ooh, I didn’t expect this.'” His voice and self-assured tone instantly caught her off guard, leaving her intrigued.

However, Michelle still remained cautious. When Barack arrived at the law firm on his first day, he was late. Initially, any spark she had felt seemed to fade. But that quickly changed when she entered the reception hall.

Barack Obama’s Charm and Confidence
As soon as Michelle walked in, she was surprised by how much more attractive Barack was in person. “He stood up. He is tall, right? And he’s cute,” she said. “He was much cuter than his picture. The picture didn’t do him justice.” Barack apologized for being late, explaining that the rain had delayed the buses. Michelle was impressed by how calm and confident he was despite his tardiness.

Their connection deepened as Michelle helped him settle in for the day. She took him to lunch, and their conversation flowed effortlessly. She described their first conversation as having a “hint of a spark.” The more they talked, the more Michelle realized how confident, mature, and funny Barack was.

Resisting the Romance: A Slow Burn
Despite the growing attraction, Michelle remained adamant about not dating someone she was mentoring. She thought it would be inappropriate, so she talked herself out of pursuing anything romantic. “I told myself it would be completely inappropriate for me to date this dude that I’m advising. It would be tacky and it would be expected.”

Still, Michelle couldn’t help but talk about Barack to her friends and compliment him. Over time, they grew closer, bonding over shared interests and similar opinions. One evening, during a firm outing to see Les Misérables, Barack suggested they leave early because they were both bored. This “rule-breaking” moment sparked a shift in Michelle’s thinking, and they ended up going for drinks. It was then that she realized she liked him.

Barack’s Persistence and Michelle’s Change of Heart
Barack didn’t let Michelle’s resistance deter him. He began asking her out, but Michelle continued to turn him down, still feeling it would be “tacky.” However, Barack wasn’t concerned about the firm’s opinion of their relationship. He was direct, telling her, “I like you, you’re funny, you are cute. We should go on a proper date.”

Eventually, Michelle agreed, and their first date marked the beginning of their romance. In 1992, Michelle and Barack married at Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, and their family grew with the birth of their daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama.
