A newborn baby was left with a severe facial injury requiring 13 stitches after a C-section delivery gone wrong. Learn about the incident and the emotional journey the family is facing.
A Denver mother’s excitement turned to shock and heartbreak when her newborn baby suffered a severe facial injury requiring 13 stitches after an emergency C-section. Reazjhana Williams, who had planned for a natural birth, was blindsided by the series of events that followed her arrival at the hospital.
In early June 2021, Reazjhana came to the hospital eagerly awaiting the birth of her daughter. However, things quickly took a drastic turn when the doctors were unable to detect the baby’s heartbeat. This led to an urgent decision for an emergency C-section.
“I had been given a pill to speed up my labor, and moments later, I was rushed into surgery,” Reazjhana recalled. But what followed was far from what she had imagined.
The Startling Discovery
After giving birth to her daughter, Kyanni, Reazjhana was left stunned and distressed. Instead of the joy of immediately bonding with her baby, she was forced to watch as her newborn was whisked away to a plastic surgeon.

Kyanni was born with a large, deep laceration on one side of her face. The laceration was so severe that the baby needed immediate surgery, leaving the family in shock and confusion. The emotional toll was immense for the new parents, already dealing with the trauma of an emergency birth.
A Medical Explanation
The hospital explained that the baby’s face injury occurred because her head was positioned too close to the placenta wall during the C-section. This positioning caused unanticipated damage during the surgical procedure. The medical team reportedly rushed to address the issue, seeking the expertise of a plastic surgeon to treat the injury.
Kyanni’s injury required 13 stitches to repair the deep laceration. As her father, Damarqus, described, it was an upsetting and painful experience: “It’s upsetting, she’s not comfortable,” he said.
Family’s Heartbreak
The emotional strain on Reazjhana and Damarqus was compounded by the injury to their baby’s face. “I’ve never heard of anybody having to deal with their baby’s face looking like this after a C-section,” said Reazjhana. The parents were left not only grappling with the physical trauma but also with questions about the medical procedure that led to their newborn’s injury.
In response to the incident, Denver Health released a statement acknowledging the complication, stating, “While this is a known medical complication in emergency C-sections, our focus is always on providing care in the best interest of the mother and child.”
A Community Rallying for Support
Despite the heartbreak, the Williams family has received an outpouring of support from the community. A GoFundMe page has raised over $11,000 to help with medical expenses related to the incident, a testament to the compassion and solidarity of their community.
As Kyanni continues to heal, Reazjhana and Damarqus are left navigating both the physical and emotional challenges of the situation, hoping for a brighter future for their daughter.
