Tragedy has struck in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, after the body of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro, who was 11 weeks pregnant, was discovered weeks after she went missing. On August 19, 2025, the young woman’s remains were found in a wooded area behind her boyfriend Gregory Groom’s home, prompting his arrest and charges of murder.

Monteiro, who had recently graduated from Attleboro High School, was reported missing on August 7, 2025, after last being seen at Groom’s home on August 6. Groom initially told authorities that she had arrived at his residence by rideshare and that they had argued about her staying there. He claimed she left shortly after, and he had not heard from her since. Groom reported her missing to the police the following day.

However, investigators soon uncovered disturbing information leading to Groom’s arrest. Monteiro had been living in a homeless shelter for pregnant women in Pembroke before her disappearance, and her relationship with Groom had been troubled, marked by past domestic issues. On the night she went missing, Monteiro reached out to her sister, Faith Monteiro, describing a violent altercation with Groom. In a text message, Kylee said, “He threw me on the ground, he pulled my hair, and strangled me. My phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg.”

Her last known text came the following day, after which she stopped responding to friends and family. A friend later revealed that Kylee had told her she didn’t feel safe and that something seemed wrong before she disappeared completely.
A search of Groom’s 25-acre property on August 14 turned up no evidence, but during a second interview on August 19, Groom admitted to a confrontation with Monteiro. He said they argued, and he pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head. Groom claimed he then threatened to knock her phone out of her hand when she tried to contact someone.
After this admission, police obtained a search warrant and began preparing to search the area. At this point, Groom allegedly began drawing a map, guiding them to a spot behind a shed on his property. There, he confessed to stabbing Monteiro twice in the neck and once in the chest, with the knife breaking off in her body. He then buried her in a shallow grave approximately 20 yards away, covering the body with brush.
Following this confession, authorities recovered her body after digging in the described area. It was about five feet underground, and the remains were consistent with Monteiro’s description. The body is currently with the medical examiner for further identification and autopsy.
Groom was arraigned on August 20 and is being held without bail on charges of murder, assault and battery on a pregnant victim, assault and battery on a family or household member, and aggravated intimidation of a witness, juror, police, or court official. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for September 10, 2025.
Kylee’s family, devastated by the loss, shared their heartbreak. They revealed that Kylee had been looking forward to starting her life as a mother, with plans to enroll in welding school and build a future for her unborn child. “She had so much potential,” family friend Juliette Piette remarked. “When she found out she was pregnant, we were helping her get ready to become a mom.”
Before her tragic death, Kylee had announced her pregnancy on Instagram, sharing a photo of a heart-shaped baby blanket and crayons spelling out “BABY GROOM,” accompanied by a joyful caption. Her family is now left to cope with the loss of a young woman full of promise and a future that was tragically cut short.
The investigation into the motive behind the murder is still ongoing, and officials have asked the public for patience as they continue to seek justice for Kylee Monteiro.
