Grace Kelley Opens Up About Her Difficult Childhood and Journey to Healing

Grace Kelley, the 28-year-old daughter of country music star Wynonna Judd, has bravely shared the details of her difficult childhood, marked by abuse, instability, and a battle with addiction. In a revealing interview with The Daily Progress in July 2025, Kelley reflected on the challenges she faced growing up in a famous family while grappling with trauma and personal struggles.

A Traumatic Childhood Amidst Fame

Despite being born into a high-profile family—her mother, Wynonna Judd, and her late grandmother, Naomi Judd, were Grammy-winning country musicians—Kelley’s personal life was far from glamorous. Growing up in Tennessee, she was surrounded by church teachings, but the reality at home didn’t align with those values. Kelley revealed that her stepfather, D.R. Roach—Judd’s former husband and bodyguard—molested her when she was a child.

While her mother initially attempted to address the abuse with family counseling, Kelley explained that the situation escalated during a session, leading to the involvement of law enforcement. Roach was arrested in 2007, when Kelley was only 10 years old, and later pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated sexual battery. Her mother filed for divorce only after the arrest became public.

In her interview, Kelley spoke candidly about her feelings towards her mother’s actions: “So is my mom rich? Yeah, she’s so rich that she was able to sweep me under the rug and abuse me and then cover it all up. I don’t want to talk bad about my mom, but we’ll just say she’s a good performer. She was never a mother.” These words reflect the deep pain Kelley carries from feeling neglected and abandoned, despite her family’s fame.

Wynonna Judd has not publicly addressed her daughter’s claims, but she briefly mentioned her role as a caregiver during a January 2025 interview on Today with Jenna & Friends.

Legal Struggles and Arrests

While navigating her personal struggles, Kelley faced several legal issues. In May 2023, she was jailed in Tennessee for violating a protection order and her parole. Her legal troubles continued, with arrests in 2024, including misdemeanor charges in Alabama for indecent exposure and obstructing government operations, as well as a charge for fleeing the police in Georgia. In October 2024, Kelley was arrested in Charlottesville after a strange incident involving a church van. She was hallucinating from drug use and unknowingly climbed into a trailer attached to the van, eventually driving off with it. After her arrest, Kelley accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to time served, about six weeks in jail.

A Turning Point: Faith and Sobriety

Despite the turbulent years of addiction and legal struggles, Kelley’s journey took a positive turn after meeting Pastor Kent Hart and his wife, Megan, who supported her during a difficult time. They reached out to her after her court-ordered ban from their church and welcomed her back with open arms. Kelley, who had been moving from place to place, finally found a sense of stability and a newfound purpose.

“I gave my life to God—oh, man, it’s just beautiful,” she shared, reflecting on her transformation. Kelley credits the Harts with helping her break the cycle of addiction, offering the love and support she needed to begin her path to sobriety. She now attends church regularly and has remained sober, finding peace in the life she is building in Charlottesville.
