A Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer

Caprio first shared his diagnosis in December 2023, during what should have been a celebration of his birthday. Despite the devastating news, Caprio’s strength and optimism shone through. In a video message, he declared, “I know this is a long road, and I’m fully prepared to fight as hard as I can.”

Following his diagnosis, Caprio sought treatment across multiple states, enduring six months of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiation. Despite the draining toll the treatment took on him, Caprio remained resilient, urging his followers to “dig down deep within your courage” to face adversity head-on.

Even as his health declined, Caprio’s messages never stopped. In his final days, he posted an update from the hospital, requesting prayers from his followers, saying, “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback, but I’m still fighting.”

Born on November 24, 1936, in Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood, Caprio’s rise was rooted in determination. Raised by Italian-American parents who worked as fruit peddlers, Caprio’s early life was filled with hard work. He shined shoes, delivered newspapers, and worked his way through Providence College and Suffolk University School of Law.

Caprio’s public service career began in 1962 when he joined the Providence City Council. Later, he became the chief judge of the Providence Municipal Court, where his courtroom became the stage for Caught in Providence, a show that captured his genuine compassion and reached billions of viewers worldwide. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.

Giving Back to the Community

Caprio’s generosity extended beyond the courtroom. He founded the Filomena Fund, named after his mother, to assist residents in paying traffic fines. He also supported scholarships, the Rhode Island Food Bank, and Boys Town of Italy. His commitment to helping others was unwavering, even after his retirement in October 2023.
