As Ozempic’s popularity grows, a new side effect, known as ‘Ozempic vulva,’ is emerging. Learn about this issue and its potential impact on users, including vaginal changes and discomfort.
Ozempic, a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist medication originally designed to treat Type 2 diabetes, has gained immense popularity due to its weight loss benefits. The medication works by slowing down the digestive system, leading to prolonged feelings of fullness, and when combined with changes in diet and lifestyle, it can result in significant weight loss. However, as with many medications, side effects are emerging, and a new one is gaining attention: the so-called “Ozempic vulva.”
While this side effect has not been officially listed by the drug’s manufacturers, women using Ozempic have begun reporting it on social media platforms like Reddit. The term “Ozempic vulva” refers to changes in the appearance and function of the vulva and vagina. Dr. Tahery, a Los Angeles-based physician, explains that the rapid weight loss associated with Ozempic can cause sagging skin, including in the vulva area, which may give it a deflated or aged appearance.
As the body loses fat, the mons pubis and labia majora (the outer labia) may appear less full, leading to what some users describe as a sagging or “deflated” look. Dr. Justin Perron, a board member of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, notes that the loss of subcutaneous fat, including in the vulva, can result from general weight loss, causing the skin to sag or the area to appear “aged.” Additionally, the medication’s effect on muscle mass may weaken pelvic muscles, contributing to this issue.
Another common side effect of Ozempic is vaginal dryness, as noted by US gynecologist Dr. Melanie Bone. The changes in hormone levels and dehydration caused by the drug can lead to discomfort and dryness in the vaginal area.
Some patients have turned to dermal fillers for a solution, undergoing procedures for what is known as “genital rejuvenation” to restore volume and address the changes in the vulva.
Though not officially recognized as a side effect, the increasing reports of “Ozempic vulva” among users suggest that this may be an issue affecting a significant number of people. If you or someone you know is using Ozempic, it’s important to be aware of these potential side effects and consult with a healthcare provider if necessary.
