A German family visiting Istanbul tragically died after suspected exposure to toxic bedbug spray chemicals in their hotel room. Authorities are investigating possible pesticide misuse.
A German family on vacation in Istanbul, Turkey, has died in what authorities now believe may be a tragic case of bedbug spray poisoning inside their hotel room.
The Bocek family—parents Cigdem and Servet, and their two young children, Masal (3) and Kadir Muhammet (6)—checked into a hotel on November 9. Just days into the trip, all four family members suddenly became seriously ill.
Family Became Sick During Vacation
At first, doctors suspected food poisoning, since the family had eaten at several restaurants and food stalls around the city. But their symptoms grew much worse.
On November 11, the family was rushed to the emergency room after suffering:

Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness
After returning to the hotel later that day, their conditions rapidly worsened. The two children and their mother, Cigdem, died shortly afterward.
Servet was moved to intensive care and fought for his life for six days. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on November 17.
Officials Now Suspect Toxic Bedbug Spray
Authorities now believe the family may have been poisoned by aluminium phosphide, a highly toxic chemical often used in pest control. If inhaled in large amounts, it can be deadly.
Investigators think the toxic gas may have entered the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation system after a pest control treatment gone wrong.
Investigation Expands to Hotel Staff and Pest Control Company
Police initially arrested four street vendors on suspicion of negligence. But the investigation has since widened to 11 people, including hotel employees and individuals linked to the pest control company.

Investigators found troubling details:
A worker who handled the pesticide reportedly did not have proper certification
Two other tourists staying at the same hotel also became sick and needed hospital treatment
Police seized personal belongings from these guests for testing
The hotel was fully evacuated and sealed. Teams collected samples from multiple rooms as toxicology tests continue.
Family’s Relatives Demand Justice
Cigdem’s father, Mustafa Celik, said his daughter and her family were planning to visit him after their vacation. He is devastated and has vowed to pursue legal action against everyone responsible.
He said he wants the maximum punishment for anyone whose actions led to the deaths of his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Cause of Death Still Under Investigation
The bodies of the family were handed over to forensic experts, and toxicology results from both the victims and hotel are still pending. Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and more arrests could follow based on the findings.
