As Dick Van Dyke prepares to turn 100, the Hollywood legend shares his struggles with aging, loneliness, and the secret to staying happy despite life’s challenges.

Living to be 100 is a rare milestone—fewer than one in 100 men and one in 50 women reach this age. As Dick Van Dyke prepares to celebrate his 100th birthday on December 13, he’s opened up about the challenges of living a long life and the toll that aging has taken on him.

At 99 years old, the legendary Hollywood actor reflects on the joys of a long career but also the sadness of outliving so many of his loved ones. In an interview with The Times of London, Van Dyke shared how the losses of his first wife, Margie Willett, and his longtime partner, Michelle Triola, have affected him deeply.

As he approaches his centennial birthday, Van Dyke has revealed that the realities of growing old have left him feeling “diminished,” both physically and socially. His once vibrant career, which included iconic roles in Mary Poppins and The Dick Van Dyke Show, now feels like a distant memory as age-related limitations have made it difficult for him to leave his home in California for acting roles or public appearances.

“Travel takes so much out of me that I have to say no,” Van Dyke explained, referring to the challenges of maintaining his active lifestyle.

Despite these challenges, Van Dyke remains sharp in mind and spirit, finding solace in his ongoing romance with his wife, Arlene Silver, who is nearly half his age. The couple married in 2012 when Van Dyke was 86, and he credits their relationship as the main reason he hasn’t become a “hermetic grouch.”

“I feel somewhere between two thirds and three quarters of my age, which is still saying a lot,” he joked.

A Secret to Staying Happy

Van Dyke has always maintained a positive outlook on life, and he attributes his joy to his relationship with Arlene. He fondly describes their connection as his most important reason for staying mentally and emotionally active. Their relationship has helped him avoid becoming disillusioned with aging and the world around him.

However, the actor admitted that the current state of the world can be difficult to bear, especially with the recent Southern California wildfires and the global turmoil. “The cruelty being inflicted on the entire world by those in power… it can turn anyone sour and dark,” he said, acknowledging how hard it is to remain upbeat in such challenging times.

Finding Joy in Life and Music

As he nears 100, Dick Van Dyke’s legacy is not only marked by his iconic roles but by his enduring spirit, his positive outlook, and his ability to keep joy in his life, no matter the challenges he faces.
