Donald Trump has been making headlines once again, this time for challenging Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) to take an IQ test after he boasted about the results of his own medical examination.

While on his Asia tour, Trump told reporters that he had recently undergone a series of tests at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He proudly declared that his MRI results were “perfect,” and that his doctor had told him he was in “exceptional health” for his age. He even went as far as to say, “The doctor said it was some of the best reports, for the age, they’ve ever seen.”

But Trump didn’t stop there. He also bragged about undergoing what he called a “very hard” aptitude test, which he claimed was designed to assess cognitive abilities. He then made a dig at AOC, suggesting she take a similar test. “You give her an IQ test,” Trump said. “Have her pass, like, the exams that I decided to take when I was at Walter Reed.”

Trump went on to describe the test, claiming it started with easy questions but became more difficult as it progressed. “The first couple of questions are easy, a tiger, an elephant, a giraffe… when you get up to about five or six… they couldn’t come close to answering any of those questions,” he added.

AOC Fires Back on Twitter

In her typical sharp-tongued style, AOC quickly responded to Trump’s challenge on Twitter. She humorously asked, “Hello Mr. President! Out of curiosity, did those doctors ask you to draw a clock by any chance? Was that part hard for you, too? Asking for 340 million people.”

Her tweet pointed out the irony of Trump bragging about passing a cognitive test that isn’t actually an IQ test. Her comment quickly went viral, with many online joining her in poking fun at the president’s claims.

The Test Trump Took: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment

While Trump referred to the test as an “IQ test,” experts quickly clarified that the test he likely underwent is the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The MoCA is designed to detect early signs of cognitive decline, including conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. It is not an IQ test and is not intended to measure intelligence in the way that a traditional IQ test does.

Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist and professor of medicine, explained to The Washington Post last year that the test “sets a very, very low bar” for anyone carrying the nuclear codes. Reiner added that it’s “nothing to brag about” and isn’t a measure of intellectual capacity.

The Truth About Cognitive Testing

Medical professionals have confirmed that passing the MoCA doesn’t equate to having a high IQ or being intellectually gifted. In fact, it’s a basic screening tool used to identify people at risk for dementia or other cognitive issues. This means that Trump’s bragging about the test doesn’t imply that he is particularly brilliant—it’s simply a test used to monitor basic cognitive health.

Trump’s repeated claims about the tests have raised questions about his understanding of the medical exams he’s undergone. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, while important for detecting cognitive decline, has little to do with measuring someone’s overall intellectual ability.
