Donald Trump expressed a desire to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his Asia tour, but Kim has yet to respond. Discover the latest on the stalled negotiations and what might happen next.
As US President Donald Trump continues his Asia tour, a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was one of the highlights he hoped to achieve. However, despite his public invitation, Kim has yet to respond, leaving Trump’s efforts to rebuild ties with North Korea in limbo.
Trump’s Desire to Build Bridges
Before embarking on his Asia tour, which includes visits to Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan, Trump made it clear that he hoped to meet Kim Jong Un during the trip. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump stated, “I just had a good relationship with him. I would love to see him, if he wants to, if he even gets this message.”

He added, “If you want to put out the word, I’m open to it.” This willingness to meet with Kim marked a significant shift from his earlier approach, during which he frequently mocked the North Korean leader by calling him “little rocket man” over threats related to North Korea’s nuclear program.
Kim’s Silence and Conditions for Talks
Despite Trump’s open invitation, both US and South Korean officials confirmed that no plans for a meeting have been made. There has been no response from Kim Jong Un or his government, leaving Trump’s hopes of a breakthrough seemingly unfulfilled.
Interestingly, Kim had previously expressed a conditional willingness to meet Trump. In a speech last month, Kim indicated that he would be open to talks as long as the US dropped its demands for North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal. “If the United States drops the absurd obsession with denuclearising us and accepts reality, there is no reason for us not to sit down with the United States,” Kim said, emphasizing that North Korea would not engage with South Korea.

Trump’s Offer and the Issue of Sanctions
Trump’s invitation to Kim is partly motivated by his desire to discuss lifting sanctions on North Korea, which have been in place due to the country’s missile and nuclear programs. Trump noted that his offer to discuss sanctions was a “big” step in the right direction.
However, it remains unclear whether this gesture will be enough to bring Kim to the negotiating table. Kim has been strengthening his international ties, particularly with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China, which complicates the situation. Some analysts suggest that Trump’s close relationships with both Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping might play a role in breaking the deadlock.
No Movement on North-South Korea Relations
The lack of movement on the Trump-Kim meeting is also a setback for South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who hoped that Trump’s intervention could help ease growing tensions between North and South Korea. Lee had hoped that Trump could help reignite peace talks, but without a response from Kim, those hopes remain unfulfilled.

South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young indicated that North Korea might release a statement soon, possibly clarifying its stance on Trump’s offer. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has highlighted that Trump’s acknowledgment of North Korea as a “nuclear power” could be one of the key aspects of the talks.
Implications for International Relations
While no meeting between Trump and Kim seems likely during this Asia tour, the possibility of such a meeting in the future could reshape global politics. Trump’s rapport with Russia and China might help him leverage a deal with Kim, potentially signaling a new phase in international relations.
