A pilot has captured mind-blowing footage of flying into the eye of Hurricane Melissa as it approaches Jamaica. With catastrophic winds and flooding expected, the storm has already caused fatalities in the Caribbean island.
Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful storm of the year, has been gaining strength as it nears Jamaica, with maximum sustained winds of up to 280 km/h (175 mph). The storm, dubbed the “storm of the century,” is expected to bring catastrophic flash flooding, landslides, and destructive winds to the Caribbean island.
Despite the imminent dangers, storm chaser and pilot @FlynonymousWX (also known as Tropical Cowboy of Danger) uploaded breathtaking footage of his fly-throughs into the eye of the hurricane. This rare and dramatic video offers a view of the storm from the Atlantic Ocean and a look directly into the storm’s eye, with its mesmerizing swirl of clouds.
Hurricane Melissa’s Path and Impact

The National Hurricane Center has warned that Storm Melissa could cause widespread infrastructure damage, power outages, and isolated communities could be severely affected. Evacuation orders have been enforced in various parts of Jamaica as the storm approaches.
The impact of Hurricane Melissa is expected to be devastating, with life-threatening storm surges and damaging waves predicted along the island’s southern coast. Officials emphasized that failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
Storm-Chaser’s Incredible Footage
The pilot, who has two decades of experience flying with the U.S. Air Force, is well-known for his “hurricane hunter missions”. In one of his videos posted on Twitter, viewers can see the calm center of the storm from inside the eye, which many described as the “clearest video of any eye-wall” they had ever seen. One user commented: “Hate the destruction & fear they bring, but from a pure nature standpoint, they are just mind-blowing to look at.”

The pilot’s fearless approach to the storm captivated storm enthusiasts, with one Twitter user describing it as “pure epicness.”
Fatalities and Injuries in Jamaica
As Hurricane Melissa continues to make its approach, three people in Jamaica have already lost their lives while preparing for the storm. According to Jamaica’s Minister of Health, Chris Tufton, these deaths were related to the cutting down of trees and, in one tragic case, electrocution during tree removal.
In addition to the fatalities, at least 15 people have been injured, many from falling from rooftops and trees as they attempted to secure their homes. The Jamaican government has imposed a mandatory evacuation order in several areas as the storm gets closer.
