Nigel the parrot, missing for four years, returns to his British owner speaking fluent Spanish. The emotional reunion reveals a surprising twist in his time away.

A British parrot named Nigel has been reunited with his owner after being missing for four years, but there was something very different about him when he returned—he was speaking Spanish.

Nigel, an African Grey parrot, had originally been known for speaking with a British accent. However, after being found in Southern California by a vet named Teresa Micco in 2014, Nigel had picked up Spanish during his time away. Teresa, who mistakenly thought Nigel was her own missing parrot, tracked down his microchip and located his true owner, Darren Chick, who lives in Torrance but is originally from the UK.

When Teresa first contacted Darren, he initially didn’t think it was his parrot, but after further investigation, he learned that Nigel had been missing for four years. To Darren’s surprise, Nigel was now speaking in Spanish.

Darren, visibly emotional, shared that he knew instantly it was his parrot. “It’s really weird. I knew it was him from the minute I saw him,” Darren said, adding that he was moved to tears during the reunion.

The parrot, who had spent years with a new family, had picked up a new language and even started mimicking sounds, such as barking like the dogs at his new home. According to Julia Sperling, who had initially found the bird, Nigel was happily singing and talking, even saying, “What happened?” in Spanish.

As the story unfolded, it was revealed that while Nigel had been missing, he had been adopted by a family who referred to him as “Morgan.” This family had purchased Nigel from a garage sale, unaware of his history. They had grown attached to the parrot, especially the grandfather, who had a special bond with Nigel and had taught him Spanish. When the family reached out to Darren, explaining that Nigel (now Morgan) had flown away, Darren decided to return the bird to his new family.

Liza Smith, a family member, expressed how heartbroken they were after losing the parrot. “We’re just over the moon,” she said. “Morgan’s loss has been hard on him. They have a very special bond.” Smith also shared that Nigel had become a memento for her grandfather, following the passing of her grandmother two years prior.

Now reunited with both families, Nigel’s story serves as a reminder of the unexpected twists life can take, as well as the deep connections that can form between humans and animals.
