On October 17, 2025, Trump and Zelenskyy met in hopes of negotiating a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. While both leaders have expressed a desire to continue dialogue, the meeting reportedly turned sour as tensions flared.

According to a report from the Financial Times, Trump delivered a shocking ultimatum to Zelenskyy, urging Ukraine to accept Vladimir Putin’s “maximalist” demands for peace, which included surrendering the entire Donbas region to Russia. Zelenskyy, however, staunchly rejected this idea, leading to an intense shouting match between the two.

In the heat of the moment, Trump allegedly tossed maps aside and used expletives during the exchange, reportedly expressing his frustration with the ongoing conflict. An official familiar with the meeting shared that Trump said, “This red line, I don’t even know where this is. I’ve never been there,” referring to the front lines in Ukraine. Trump also reportedly said, “Putin will destroy you if you don’t concede to these terms.”

Zelenskyy, who has made it clear that he will not surrender the Donbas region to Russia, fired back, insisting that “Putin doesn’t want peace, that’s why we need pressure on him.”

The meeting, which seemed to achieve little in terms of resolving the conflict, follows Zelenskyy’s earlier statements about his hopes that Trump would agree to supply Ukraine with advanced weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles. These missiles have a much longer range than Ukraine’s current arsenal, and Zelenskyy had hoped Trump would authorize their supply. However, Trump sidestepped the question, acknowledging the importance of the missiles but emphasizing that the US should prioritize its own defense.

Trump later confirmed that the US would not be providing the Tomahawks at this time, adding that he hoped the war could end without escalating to that point. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks. I think we’re fairly close to that,” he stated.

After the meeting, Trump took to Truth Social to reiterate his position, urging both Ukraine and Russia to halt the fighting. “Enough blood has been shed, with property lines being defined by War and Guts. They should stop where they are. Let both claim victory, let History decide!” he posted.

This explosive exchange highlights the growing tensions and differing perspectives between the two leaders as they attempt to navigate the complex situation in Ukraine. Whether the US will play a more active role in supplying Ukraine with advanced weaponry or push for a peace settlement remains uncertain.
