Trump Accuses Zelenskyy of Planting Question About Tomahawk Missiles Amid Russia-Ukraine War

In a recent meeting with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, Donald Trump sidestepped a key question about supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, hinting at a planted question and addressing his concerns about escalating the war.

During a meeting on October 18, President Donald Trump had a tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, particularly regarding the potential supply of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. Zelenskyy had hoped for a concrete answer on whether the US would send the advanced missiles, which could significantly shift the balance in Ukraine’s ongoing battle with Russia. However, things didn’t go as planned.

Trump Sidesteps Key Question

When asked by a reporter whether the US would supply Tomahawk missiles, Trump responded by deflecting the question. He seemed to imply that Zelenskyy had planted the question, saying: “Fair question—exactly as he told you to say it. But we’re gonna be talking about it.” Trump’s response left the issue unresolved, as he neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of sending the missiles.

Although Trump didn’t outright dismiss the option, he made it clear that he had concerns about giving away critical military equipment. “Tomahawks are a big deal,” Trump stated. “But one thing I have to say, we want Tomahawks, also. We don’t want to be giving away things that we need to protect our country.”

Trump added that he hoped the war could be ended without resorting to sending such advanced weapons. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks,” he said.

Zelenskyy’s Optimism Amid Ambiguity

Despite Trump’s ambiguous response, Zelenskyy appeared optimistic in an interview following the meeting. He acknowledged that Trump hadn’t fully rejected the idea of supplying Tomahawks, which he viewed as a positive sign. “It’s good that President Trump didn’t say ‘no’, but for today, didn’t say ‘yes’,” Zelenskyy remarked. He also noted that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin might be fearful of the US supplying Ukraine with such advanced missiles.

Zelenskyy suggested that the prospect of Tomahawk missiles could further escalate the war, a scenario that would likely be concerning for Putin. “I think that Putin is afraid that the United States will deliver us Tomahawks,” Zelenskyy said.
