Reports suggest that the burglars gained access to the museum via the side closest to the River Seine, where construction work was taking place. They used a goods lift to enter the Apollo Gallery around 9:30 AM, catching the museum by surprise.

The thieves, believed to be a group of three or four, were heavily masked. One suspect stood as a lookout while the others, equipped with chainsaws and cutting tools, made quick work of breaking into the gallery. The entire robbery took just seven minutes, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.

The Apollo Gallery is home to some of France’s most treasured jewels, including diamonds like the 140-carat Regent Diamond. The display is a remnant of France’s royal history, showcasing the nation’s crown jewels, many of which were lost or sold after the French Revolution.

Thankfully, not all the items in the gallery were taken. The famous Regent Diamond, along with other notable gems like the Sancy and Hortensia Diamonds, are believed to be safe.
