Harriet Kay Recker, 82, has been accused of shooting her husband, Dennis Recker, at a South Carolina nursing home. Investigators discovered a chilling note she allegedly left behind before the fatal shooting.
Harriet Kay Recker, an 82-year-old woman, has been arrested after allegedly shooting her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at a nursing home in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The tragic incident occurred on September 12, just a day after Dennis was admitted to the facility for extra care.
Investigators now believe that the attack was premeditated, based on statements from witnesses, family members, and a series of cryptic notes and financial documents found in the couple’s home.
The Eerie Note
One of the most unsettling pieces of evidence discovered during the investigation was a note allegedly found in Recker’s purse. The note, which is reported to have been written by Harriet Kay Recker, read:
“To you all, this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. We can’t have a life without someone, and that someone can’t be me as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”
This note, which seemed to reflect the emotional distress that Recker was allegedly feeling, matched other notes found in her home, raising suspicions of premeditation.

The Shooting Incident
Dennis Recker had been admitted to the Preston Health Center on Birdsong Way for additional care due to his declining health. On the morning of the shooting, a neighbor had brought the couple to the facility, leaving them alone in the room while they went to fetch an extra chair.
When the neighbor returned, they heard a loud noise and rushed back to the room, where they allegedly saw Harriet Recker holding a revolver. Dennis had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and tragically, his last words were reportedly, “She shot me.” Despite paramedics’ best efforts, Dennis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrest and Charges
Harriet Kay Recker was arrested and taken to Beaufort County Jail the same day. After her arrest, she requested an attorney but told officers, “He [Dennis] was a good man,” adding that it was a “sad situation.”
Recker has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. As the case progresses, the investigation continues to shed light on the tragic events leading up to Dennis Recker’s death.
Community Shock
The incident has deeply shocked the local community. Ted Dwemoh, a neighbor who provided pest control services at the couple’s home in Sun City, spoke about Harriet Recker’s character, describing her as “always loving” and “the nicest person in Sun City.”
This tragedy has left friends, family, and neighbors in disbelief, as they struggle to comprehend how a woman known for her kindness could be involved in such a heartbreaking act.
