Ian Watkins, the convicted pedophile and former Lostprophets frontman, met a brutal end in prison. A former inmate describes the dangers he faced and how his crimes led to his violent death.
Former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins, who was convicted for horrific child sex abuse crimes, has died a violent death in prison. The 48-year-old was found dead in his cell at HMP Wakefield on October 11, 2025, after suffering a brutal throat slashing at the hands of fellow inmates.
Watkins, whose crimes included attempting to rape a baby, was serving a 35-year sentence for his crimes. Despite efforts by prison staff and first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to excessive blood loss. HMP Wakefield, a maximum-security prison located near Leeds, holds some of the most dangerous criminals in the UK, including violent offenders, murderers, and gangsters.
According to one prison officer, the combination of sex offenders and violent criminals makes Wakefield a particularly dangerous place.
“There are so many sex offenders here, from those convicted of date rape to the worst of the worst child abusers,” the officer explained. “When you mix that with violent criminals and murderers, it’s a very dangerous environment.”

However, Watkins’ crimes were different. Unlike many other inmates, everyone knew exactly what he had done. Watkins’ crime of attempting to rape an infant made him one of the most despised prisoners in the facility.
A former inmate shared his experience, speaking anonymously:
“Watkins was a dead man walking from the moment he entered Wakefield. There’s an unwritten rule that you don’t ask people what crime they committed, but everyone knew about his attempted rape of a baby. He had been attacked before and was abused every day.”
The former inmate continued, saying that Watkins was isolated, often spending time alone in his room. He was described as self-centered, remorseless, and with few, if any, friends in prison.
Despite being halfway through his 35-year sentence, Watkins’ fate was sealed long before his death. His notorious crimes, particularly the abuse of children, made him one of the most reviled inmates, leading to ongoing violence against him during his time in prison.

The violent end to Watkins’ life sparked celebrations in the prison. According to one partner of a serving prisoner, there were reports of cheering and joy among inmates when word spread that Watkins had been killed.
“All of the prisoners were locked in their cells, but word spread quickly. He was hated by everyone because of the horrific nature of his crimes,” the partner said.
Following Watkins’ death, two other inmates, Rashid Gedel (25) and Samuel Dodsworth (43), have been charged with his murder. Their actions have since brought attention to the harsh realities of prison life and how inmates react when one of their own is a convicted sex offender.
