A UK couple known for having the largest family in Britain was fined after taking their 22 children on a $70,000 Disney World vacation. Learn about the court case and the reasons behind the fine.
A British couple, famous for having the largest family in the UK, found themselves in hot water after taking their 22 children on a lavish vacation to Disney World. The couple, Noel and Sue Radford, took a number of their children and 11 grandchildren to Florida’s iconic theme park to celebrate Sue’s 50th birthday in April of this year.
While a Disney World vacation is often seen as a dream for many families, for the Radfords, the trip turned into a financial and legal headache. The family spent an eye-watering $70,000 on flights, accommodation, park passes, and other expenses to cover their large group.

However, their dream trip soon became overshadowed by a fine. The couple was taken to court for taking four of their younger children out of school for the holiday. The children were absent from school between March 24 and May 1, 2025. As a result, the Radfords were found guilty of failing to ensure regular school attendance.
Each of the parents, Noel and Sue Radford, were fined $88 per child, in addition to $160 in court costs, bringing their total financial penalty to $1,024.
Despite the legal complications, the family shared joyful moments from their trip on social media, including a cute photo of the children posing with Donald Duck at the theme park.

Lancashire County Council defended the fine, emphasizing the importance of regular school attendance for children’s education. A spokesperson said:
“Ensuring young people receive a good education is one of our key priorities. Evidence shows that school attendance is strongly linked to academic success, and it’s important for us to support our schools in this area.”
The spokesperson continued, stating that the decision to approve absences from school lies with the headteacher, and Penalty Notices are an option if requested by the school. The court ultimately decided on the fines.
The Radfords’ case serves as a reminder that while family vacations are important, it’s crucial to ensure that school attendance laws are followed to avoid additional costs and complications.
