China has retaliated against Trump’s latest tariff threats, calling them hypocritical and warning of countermeasures. Tensions rise between the US and China as Trump considers cancelling his meeting with Xi Jinping.
Tensions between the United States and China have escalated after President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose a new round of tariffs and export controls on Chinese goods. In response, China has issued a strong warning, accusing the US of hypocrisy and vowing to take “resolute measures” to protect its interests.
Trump’s Tariff Threats and Export Controls
Trump’s threat includes the imposition of a 100% tariff on Chinese imports, set to go into effect on November 1. In addition, Trump warned of new export restrictions targeting critical software, a move that Beijing has described as a “typical example of double standards.”

The announcement has already created uncertainty regarding the upcoming meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled to take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. Trump suggested that the timing of the tariff imposition was intentional, saying, “We’re gonna have to see what happens… I haven’t cancelled, but I don’t know that we’re gonna have it.”
China’s Retaliation and Warning
In response to the latest round of US measures, China’s Ministry of Commerce has vowed to protect its “legitimate rights and interests” and warned of countermeasures, including imposing special port fees on US-operated ships. The Ministry characterized the actions as “defensive” in response to what they view as unfair charges introduced by Washington.
“The US has been ratcheting up economic measures against China since September,” the Ministry said in a statement, urging Trump to reconsider his approach. “China’s position on the trade war is consistent: we do not want it, but we are not afraid of it.”
The Core of the Trade Dispute: Rare Earth Minerals

At the heart of the growing conflict between the two nations is the trade of rare earth minerals—key components used in everything from smartphones to electric vehicles, as well as renewable energy technology and military hardware. China is a dominant global producer of these essential materials, and the US has grown increasingly concerned about China’s control over this market.
Recently, China introduced restrictions on the export of the technology needed to mine and refine rare earth minerals, a move that has heightened tensions with the US. Trump reacted strongly, calling China’s actions “very hostile” and arguing on Truth Social that Beijing should not be allowed to “hold the world captive” by limiting access to these vital materials.
China’s Warning to Trump
The Chinese Ministry has strongly discouraged Trump from continuing to make threats, emphasizing that while China does not seek a trade war, it will not shy away from defending its interests. The US currently imposes a 30% tariff on Chinese goods, while China places a 10% tariff on US imports.
As the trade war intensifies, it remains uncertain whether the planned meeting between Trump and Xi will proceed as scheduled, or whether it will be canceled amid the growing dispute.
