Donald Trump reacts to Vladimir Putin’s support after the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado, claiming the prize’s credibility has been damaged.
Donald Trump has expressed his gratitude after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out on his behalf following the announcement that Trump did not win the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. On October 10, it was revealed that the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prestigious prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
Putin, during a press conference in Tajikistan, remarked that the Nobel Peace Prize had lost credibility due to the selection of some past winners. “There have been cases where the committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to people who have done nothing for peace,” Putin said. “In my view, these decisions have done enormous damage to the prestige of this prize.”

Putin went on to defend Trump, acknowledging his efforts in addressing long-standing international crises, particularly in the Middle East. He praised Trump for his ongoing work to achieve peace, stating, “He’s definitely trying, he’s definitely working on these issues… If Donald can achieve everything he’s strived for, everything he’s talked about and is trying to accomplish, it will be a historic event.”
Putin concluded by saying that the decision on who deserves the Nobel Peace Prize was not his to make but noted, “The credibility has largely been lost.”
Trump’s Response
Trump wasted no time in responding to Putin’s comments, expressing his appreciation on Truth Social. “Thank you to President Putin!” he posted, sharing a video clip of Putin’s remarks.
In a related development, Machado, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, publicly thanked Trump for his “decisive support” of Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement. She dedicated her award to Trump, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump. We are on the threshold of victory, and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump and the people of the United States as our principal allies.”

Trump shared that Machado had personally called him after her win, recounting their conversation: “The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today and said ‘I’m accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it.’ A really nice thing to do. I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me.'”
Norwegian Nobel Committee Defends Its Decision
The chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, defended the decision to award the prize to Machado, saying, “In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, this committee has seen [every] type of campaign. We base our decision only on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s Director of Communication, Steven Cheung, criticized the decision, stating, “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
