The court in Southern France has increased the sentence of Husamettin Dogan, who appealed his conviction for raping Gisèle Pelicot. The case involves horrific abuse over nearly a decade, with multiple men convicted.
Court Increases Sentence for Man Who Appealed Conviction for Raping Gisèle Pelicot
A court in Southern France has ruled to increase the sentence of Husamettin Dogan, the only man to appeal his conviction for raping Gisèle Pelicot. The decision comes after shocking footage of the crime was presented in court, showing Pelicot’s unconscious state during the assault.
Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, had already admitted to drugging his wife, which left her unconscious for repeated sexual assaults between 2011 and 2020. Pelicot’s actions, which were captured on video and stored on a hard drive labeled “abuse,” led to his conviction and a 20-year prison sentence. He was also found guilty of other heinous crimes, including the attempted aggravated rape of another woman and taking indecent images of his own daughter and daughters-in-law.

While Dominique Pelicot’s case drew significant attention, it was Husamettin Dogan, one of the co-accused, who appealed his conviction. Dogan, 44, denied the charges, arguing that he was unaware Gisèle had been drugged by her ex-husband. In his defense, he claimed that he could not have raped her because he did not realize she was unconscious.
Court Shows Graphic Evidence of Abuse
During the trial, videos showing the assault were presented, showing Gisèle lying unconscious and snoring while Dogan engaged in the act. Despite the chilling evidence, Dogan continued to deny the charge, stating: “I performed a sexual act, I never raped anyone. For me, rape means forcing someone, tying them up, I don’t know … I am a victim.”
However, Gisèle, who had been unaware of the full extent of the abuse until seeing the videos, vehemently disagreed. She told the court, “The first time I saw [Dogan’s] face was when I saw the videos of him raping me. They are forever etched in my memory.”
Turning directly to Dogan in the courtroom, Gisèle said: “You don’t understand that this was rape. When will you admit that it’s a crime? I am ashamed for you.”

Sentence Increased to Ten Years
The court of appeal in Nîmes rejected Dogan’s defense and, after considering the evidence, increased his original sentence from nine years to ten years for the crime of aggravated rape. This decision reflects the severity of the crime and the impact it has had on Gisèle Pelicot’s life.
In total, 51 men were convicted in connection with the abuse of Gisèle Pelicot, with each man facing varying degrees of punishment for their involvement in these horrific acts.
The Aftermath of a Decade of Abuse
Gisèle Pelicot’s case has become a symbol of courage and resilience. Having endured nearly a decade of unimaginable abuse, she has spoken out about her experiences and the trauma she continues to live with. Despite the abuse, she has never wavered in her commitment to seeking justice, and her bravery in confronting her abusers in court has been widely acknowledged.
Her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, remains behind bars, and while Gisèle has faced an overwhelming battle to seek justice, she continues to advocate for other victims of abuse, making sure their voices are heard and their pain is recognized.
