Tragic Death of Student in Tesla Crash Sparks Lawsuits Over Design Flaws

A tragic accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck resulted in the death of 19-year-old Krysta Tsukahara. Her family has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, citing dangerous design flaws in the vehicle’s door system.

The tragic death of 19-year-old Krysta Tsukahara in a car crash has sparked outrage and legal action against Tesla, as her family seeks justice for her death. Tsukahara, a second-year student at Savannah College of Art and Design, was trapped inside a burning Tesla Cybertruck after a crash on November 27, 2024, and suffered fatal injuries after being unable to escape.

The Crash and Tragic Outcome

Tsukahara was traveling with three friends when the Tesla Cybertruck crashed into a retaining wall, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The accident killed her friends, 19-year-old driver Soren Dixon and 20-year-old passenger Jack Nelson, while Tsukahara was initially trapped in the backseat. The only survivor, Jordan Miller, was pulled from the burning vehicle by a friend, who used a tree branch to break the window and rescue him moments before the vehicle was consumed by flames.

Authorities later revealed that Dixon had meth and cocaine in his system, along with a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit, which contributed to the crash. Tsukahara and Nelson also tested positive for alcohol and cocaine. Despite the crash’s severity, Tsukahara survived the initial impact with only minor injuries.

A Deadly Design Flaw

However, what followed was far more harrowing. According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Tsukahara’s parents, the young woman was unable to escape the vehicle due to a failure in the Tesla Cybertruck’s electronic door system. The lawsuit claims that the electric doors became inoperable after the crash, effectively trapping the passengers inside the burning vehicle.

The family’s lawyer, Roger Dreyer, claimed that Tesla was aware of the issue but did nothing to rectify it, accusing the company of “conscious disregard” for consumer safety. Tesla includes a manual door release, but the lawsuit argues that it is poorly designed and difficult to locate in an emergency, leaving victims with no way to escape.

The suit also alleges that Tsukahara’s death could have been prevented had the vehicle been designed with more accessible and functional emergency release systems. “Her death was preventable,” Dreyer said. “The design of this vehicle failed Krysta. There was no functioning, accessible manual override or emergency release for her to escape.”

A Father’s Heartbreak

Tsukahara’s father, Carl, expressed his heartbreak over the loss of his daughter, calling Tesla’s actions and the car’s design failures inexcusable. “Krysta was a bright, kind, and accomplished young woman with her whole life ahead of her,” he said. “We’ve had to endure not only the loss of our daughter, but the silence surrounding how this happened and why she couldn’t get out.”

The families of Tsukahara and Nelson are seeking punitive damages in their lawsuits, accusing Tesla of knowingly selling a vehicle with fatal design flaws. They argue that Tesla must be held accountable for its negligence, despite the role impaired driving played in the crash.

Impaired Driving and Legal Battle

Although the California Highway Patrol determined that speeding and impaired driving contributed to the crash, the victims’ families assert that Tesla’s design flaws played a crucial role in the tragic outcome. “They [Tesla] will want to blame Mr. Dixon, anybody but themselves,” Dreyer stated. “But this vehicle absolutely should not have entombed these individuals and my clients’ daughter.”

The incident has sparked further controversy surrounding the Tesla Cybertruck, which was launched with great fanfare in late 2023. In less than two years, the model has become one of the most criticized in the company’s history, plagued by recalls and declining sales, all while facing mounting legal challenges.

Tesla Under Scrutiny

As investigations continue and lawsuits move forward, the spotlight on Tesla’s design choices grows. Critics are questioning whether enough is being done to ensure the safety of consumers driving Tesla’s high-tech vehicles. The case has raised serious concerns about the company’s commitment to improving vehicle safety and its responsibility in preventing future tragedies.
