Discover the inspiring 46-year journey of Henry Winkler and his wife, Stacey, who fought through illness and emotional struggles together. Their marriage stands as a testament to loyalty, love, and the power of therapy.

Henry Winkler, the beloved actor known for his role as The Fonz on “Happy Days,” has lived a life filled with both triumph and hardship. Behind his Hollywood success stood Stacey Winkler, his wife of 46 years, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Their enduring marriage has been shaped by battles with illness, emotional struggles, and the deep commitment to each other that kept their relationship intact.

An Unlikely Meeting, A Lifelong Partnership
Henry and Stacey first met in 1976 at a clothing store in Beverly Hills, where she worked behind the counter. Henry, already a famous actor, had come in to buy a sports coat. What followed was an unexpected connection, sparked by Stacey’s grounded, strong-willed nature. Despite Henry’s fame, she wasn’t impressed, and their first interaction was anything but glamorous.

“I am not a gift service,” Stacey quipped when Henry asked her out for a drink, but soon after, they shared ginger ales and began a meaningful conversation.
Stacey, a divorced mother of one, was raising her 4-year-old son, Jed. Initially, Henry was reluctant to marry someone with a child, but something about Stacey changed his perspective. Within weeks, she and Jed moved into his home, and by 1978, they married in New York. They later had two more children, Zoe and Max, and made their home in Los Angeles.

Henry’s Struggle with Dyslexia
Though Henry’s career was booming, he privately struggled with dyslexia, a condition he didn’t understand until later in life. Despite his success, reading scripts and rehearsing lines was often a challenge. For years, he had been told he was lazy, but it wasn’t until he was in his 30s that he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a condition that affects reading, writing, and spelling, but has nothing to do with intelligence.

This diagnosis was a turning point for Henry, who had long struggled with self-doubt. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m not stupid. I have something with a name,'” he later recalled. Throughout this struggle, Stacey was a steady source of support, helping him with spelling, establishing healthier routines, and encouraging him to adapt. Her presence allowed Henry to manage a condition that had once hurt his confidence.

Stacey’s Breast Cancer Battle
In the early 2000s, Stacey was diagnosed with breast cancer. While Henry was filming “Arrested Development”, he tried to be supportive but admits he failed to be emotionally present in the way Stacey needed. He even kept working during her recovery, leaving her feeling unsupported.

Breast cancer, a disease that occurs when cells in the breast mutate, was a devastating diagnosis that forced Stacey to undergo chemotherapy and endure months of grueling treatment. Despite the exhaustion, she remained emotionally resolute and eventually returned to her normal life. However, Henry later described this as one of the lowest points in his role as a husband.

A Second Cancer Diagnosis
Years after her recovery, Stacey’s cancer returned, and this time, the disease required a double mastectomy. This second diagnosis brought the family even closer, and Henry was there in ways he hadn’t been before. Stacey’s renewed battle with cancer also had a ripple effect on their daughter Zoe, who reconciled with her ex-boyfriend during this challenging time, demonstrating how the family’s love and resilience strengthened their bond.

Henry’s Transformation: Therapy and Growth
During Stacey’s second cancer battle, Henry realized the importance of emotional presence and began therapy to understand why he had been emotionally absent during her first illness. Through therapy, Henry uncovered painful childhood wounds and worked to heal them, which helped him become a more patient, attentive, and open husband. This journey of self-awareness allowed him to support Stacey in a way he hadn’t before.

Stacey, witnessing Henry’s personal growth, even joined him for one therapy session, showing her support for the work he was doing to improve himself.
The Power of Choosing to Stay
Despite the challenges they faced, Henry and Stacey’s marriage has endured for over 46 years because of their constant choice to be there for one another. From raising children to dealing with health scares, their bond has been sustained through loyalty, support, and mutual commitment. They may have faced external pressures — public life, illness, emotional struggles — but their foundation has always been their choice to stand by each other.
Now, with several grandchildren and a deeper understanding of each other, Henry and Stacey continue to enjoy their life together, marked by the simple joys they share, like fishing for trout and celebrating their family milestones.
A Love That Has Withstood the Test of Time
In 2018, when Henry won an Emmy for his role in “Barry,” Stacey was by his side, just as she had been throughout his entire career. Reflecting on their decades together, Stacey remarked that they are no longer the same people they were when they first married. The experiences they’ve shared have shaped them, but the values of loyalty, support, and partnership have remained unchanged.
Their journey together, filled with ups and downs, serves as a testament to the strength of love and commitment. They continue to choose each other every day, proving that the most enduring relationships are built not on perfection, but on the constant choice to stay together through life’s challenges.
