Ben Stiller reflects on his painful five-year separation from wife Christine Taylor, which ultimately led to their reconciliation in 2022. The actor shares his personal struggles in a new documentary.

Ben Stiller, the renowned actor best known for Zoolander and Tropic Thunder, has candidly discussed his heartbreaking separation from wife Christine Taylor, with whom he rekindled his relationship in 2022. The couple, who first met in 1999 while filming the pilot for Heat Vision and Jack, married in 2000 in a picturesque oceanfront ceremony in Kauai, Hawaii.

Over the years, Stiller and Taylor starred together in multiple films, including Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Arrested Development, while raising their two children: daughter Ella Olivia, born in 2002, and son Quinlin Dempsey, born in 2005. However, after 17 years of marriage, they announced their separation in 2017, with a joint statement that expressed their continued commitment to co-parenting and remaining close friends.

“We have made the decision to separate with tremendous love and respect for each other, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple,” the statement read. “Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends.”

The couple’s five-year separation was a difficult time for both, but Stiller and Taylor eventually reconciled in 2022. In a new documentary about his late father, Jerry Stiller, and mother, Ann Meara, titled Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost, Ben shared emotional insights into the struggles he faced during that period of his life.

During the world premiere of the documentary at the New York Film Festival on October 5, Stiller revealed that, at the height of his personal struggles, he felt “disconnected” from his family. “My career had been going along for a long time, but things actually weren’t great in my personal life,” he admitted. “I just felt out of balance and unhappy and kind of disconnected from my family, from my kids, and just kind of a little bit lost.”

In an earlier interview with The New York Times, Stiller reflected on how the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 helped him and Taylor rebuild their relationship. “It was almost a year of living in the same house before we were actually together,” he explained. “But I’m so grateful for it, and I think not that many people do come back together when they separate.”

The couple spent three to four years apart before rediscovering their connection and solidifying their bond once again.

Stiller’s personal life has been under the spotlight recently, as he also made headlines last month for his public stance on Disney’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the air after controversial comments made by the talk show host about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Stiller was vocal in supporting Kimmel, signing an open letter by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) condemning Disney’s actions. His signature joined other Hollywood heavyweights like Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, and Robert De Niro.

Despite the ups and downs in his personal life, Stiller’s candid reflections on his journey with Taylor have touched many, highlighting the importance of growth, forgiveness, and personal healing in relationships.
