Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish climate activist, has claimed that she was “abducted” by Israeli forces once again, after attempting to enter Gaza as part of a humanitarian mission. Thunberg and other activists had been trying to deliver crucial aid to the region, which is facing severe hardship due to ongoing conflicts and blockades.

The situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire, with reports of widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), one in three people in Gaza is struggling with food shortages, going without sustenance for days at a time. The international community has expressed grave concerns about the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.

The United Nations has reported that at least 16 children under the age of five have died from hunger-related causes since mid-July. These alarming figures underscore the urgency of providing aid to the region.

Greta’s Persistent Efforts

Greta Thunberg has been a vocal advocate for humanitarian aid and has attempted to reach Gaza multiple times. Earlier this year, she was detained by Israeli forces after the Freedom Flotilla (FFC) boat, which she was aboard, was intercepted. The activists on the boat were sent back to their home countries after being deported.

Despite this setback, Thunberg did not give up. She joined the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sent over 40 boats and nearly 450 activists to Gaza, carrying symbolic humanitarian aid. However, the Israeli forces intercepted these vessels, detaining many activists, including Thunberg, European lawmakers, and other humanitarian workers.

The Israeli authorities reported that 39 boats from the flotilla were intercepted, halting the delivery of aid. The flotilla organizers confirmed that only one boat remained in the area, which was also at risk of being intercepted. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau and European Parliament member Rima Hassan were among those detained by Israeli forces.

In a video posted to social media, Thunberg described her situation and called for her immediate release. “If you’re watching this, I have been abducted by Israeli forces,” Thunberg said in the video. She emphasized that the mission was entirely peaceful, in compliance with international law, and focused on humanitarian assistance.

Thunberg urged her government to take action, demanding her release along with that of the other detainees.

Update from Israeli Authorities

On October 3, Israel’s Foreign Ministry issued an update, stating that four Italian citizens had already been deported. Despite the detentions, Israeli officials assured the public that all detainees, including Thunberg, were safe and in good health.
