With the rise of the new Covid variants ‘Stratus’ and ‘Nimbus’, experts urge those with symptoms to follow four key safety tips to protect themselves and prevent further spread.
The emergence of new Covid variants, Stratus (XFV) and Nimbus (NB.1.81), has caused a recent spike in infections across the United States. While the global pandemic seems like a distant memory, Covid continues to mutate and affect communities, even though the virus is less life-threatening than it was during the peak of the pandemic in 2020.
Stratus and Nimbus are two rapidly spreading strains that began to cause a surge in cases in late August, peaking in mid-September. These variants still bring with them a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including sore throats, coughs, body aches, fatigue, and even diarrhea. Although they are not as severe as the original Covid strain, they can still be debilitating, particularly for vulnerable populations.
To help slow the spread and protect yourself, health experts are advising individuals experiencing symptoms of these variants to take four important precautions:

Stay at Home and Isolate
If you’re experiencing a respiratory infection and a high temperature, the best advice is to stay at home and avoid contact with others, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Isolation helps to prevent spreading the virus to others, especially in public spaces.
Wear a Well-Fitting Face Covering
Health experts recommend wearing a surgical mask or a multi-layered fabric mask, particularly if you need to be in public or shared spaces. This will help prevent the spread of respiratory droplets that can carry the virus, reducing the risk to others around you.
Avoid Crowded, Enclosed Spaces
It’s important to avoid crowded places like public transportation, large social gatherings, or poorly ventilated areas. When possible, try to spend time in well-ventilated, open-air environments. This will help reduce exposure to the virus and lower the likelihood of transmission.

Practice Good Hygiene and Personal Care
Make sure to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds regularly. Hand sanitizer can also be useful, especially after coughing, sneezing, or before eating or touching food.
The increased spread of Nimbus and Stratus is particularly concerning in states like Nevada, Connecticut, Utah, and Delaware, where cases are currently at “very high” levels. However, in some other parts of the US, the spread appears to be slowing down.
Nimbus, first detected in China at the start of the year, spread quickly across Europe, Australia, and North America, accumulating genetic mutations that made it more effective at attaching to human cells and spreading rapidly. Patients infected with Nimbus have reported severe throat pain, often likened to a “razor-blade” sensation, in addition to common Covid symptoms.
On the other hand, Stratus, which emerged in Southeast Asia, has spread across 38 countries within just five months. Fortunately, it tends to present milder symptoms compared to Nimbus, including typical Covid signs like cough, fatigue, aches, and a runny nose.
Experts warn that while these variants may not be as dangerous as earlier forms of Covid, they are still capable of spreading quickly and causing discomfort, particularly for those who are unvaccinated or have underlying health conditions.
