Joshua Allen, winner of 2008’s So You Think You Can Dance, tragically passed away at the age of 36 after being struck by a train in Texas. His family issues a statement and fans pay tribute.

Joshua Allen, the 2008 winner of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), has passed away at the age of 36. The news was confirmed by his family following his tragic death on September 30. Allen was a beloved figure in the dance world, rising to fame as an 18-year-old contestant on the fourth season of the popular reality competition show.

After winning the SYTYCD title, Allen’s career flourished with appearances in films and TV shows, including Step Up 3D, alongside fellow SYTYCD stars Katee Shean and Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss. He also featured in the 2011 remake of Footloose, American Horror Story, Community, and commercials for major brands such as Honda, McDonald’s, and the US Census.

Sadly, Allen’s life came to a sudden end after he was struck by a train in Texas. According to the Fort Worth Police Department, they responded to a call on September 30 about a person hit by a train. Allen was taken to the hospital, where he later passed away. The police investigation is ongoing.

In the wake of Allen’s death, his family has asked for privacy and prayers during this difficult time. A family member described him as a “man of integrity” who always strived to bring his family together.

Fans have since revisited Allen’s social media accounts, where they discovered his final post was a heartfelt tribute to The Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who died earlier in September while on vacation in Costa Rica. Allen posted a picture of himself with Warner, captioning it: “Fly high King #gonetoosoon.”

Choreographer and close friend Emmanuel Hurd took to Instagram to share his sorrow, writing: “Can’t wrap my head around this…Josh…my brotha. There are no words. You were the life of the party.” Hurd also referenced the late Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss, another SYTYCD star who passed away by suicide in December 2022. “I know you’re with Stephen now and that brings me comfort. I love you bro,” Hurd added.

Allen’s passion for dance began at age eight, with Michael Jackson being one of his earliest influences. Despite having no formal training as a child, Allen surprised audiences by winning SYTYCD, later admitting that he took a few modern dance and ballet classes to expand his skills and become a better dancer.

In 2017, Allen faced legal troubles when he pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges. He was sentenced to one year in county jail, along with five years of probation, 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling, and a 10-year restraining order.
