The suspect’s identity remains under investigation, but footage shared on social media shows a man with a beard and dark clothing standing outside the synagogue with what appeared to be objects strapped to his waist. Authorities swiftly responded by deploying a bomb disposal unit, as initial reports suggested the attacker may have been carrying explosives.

The UK government has heightened security at synagogues across the country, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemning the attack. He remarked, “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.”

The attack took place in the early hours of Yom Kippur, a time when synagogues are usually filled with worshippers. Local residents, including those living next to the synagogue, described the attack as chaotic and frightening. One witness recounted hearing banging noises before the suspect emerged from the car and began the violent spree. Authorities later declared a “major incident,” with armed officers deployed to the scene and the area cordoned off.

In a statement, the Israeli Embassy condemned the violence, stating, “That such an act of violence should be perpetrated on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, in a place of prayer and community, is abhorrent and deeply distressing.”
