Keith Urban, the country music star, could stand to make over $11 million from his divorce from actress Nicole Kidman, thanks to a striking clause in their prenuptial agreement. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s relationship has been the subject of public fascination since they met in Los Angeles in 2005. They married the following year and went on to have two daughters together, Sunday Rose (17) and Faith Margaret (14). However, after nearly 19 years of marriage, the couple separated earlier this year, with Kidman officially filing for divorce on September 30, 2023.

According to court documents obtained by People, Kidman cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split and listed their date of separation as September 30. While many details of the divorce are yet to be disclosed, the public has learned more about the financial agreement between the couple—specifically the prenuptial clause that could be worth millions to Urban.

The ‘Cocaine Clause’: A Sobriety Reward

Reports from Radar Online, Hello!, and other sources suggest that one of the key clauses in Kidman and Urban’s prenup is related to Urban’s history with drug and alcohol abuse. Urban has been open about his struggles with addiction and even spoke publicly about an intervention staged by Kidman shortly after their wedding.

In a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Urban reflected on the pivotal moment when Kidman decided to intervene, sharing how he was grateful for her support. “I’m just so glad she didn’t [leave], and she made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention,” Urban said. “I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go.'”

The alleged ‘cocaine clause’ in their prenup reportedly stipulates that for every year Urban remained sober, he would receive $600,000 from Kidman. Over their nearly two decades of marriage, this would amount to a staggering $11 million.

Urban’s Journey to Sobriety

Urban has publicly credited Kidman with helping him maintain his sobriety throughout their marriage. During Kidman’s AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens.”

He continued, “Four months into a marriage, and I’m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us. Nic pushed through every negative voice – I’m sure even some of her own – and she chose love. And here we are tonight, 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I’ve ever met.”

The alleged clause would be a major part of their financial split, raising questions about the financial dynamics in high-profile celebrity divorces and how prenuptial agreements can sometimes include unusual terms.
