Woman Dies After Following Extreme ‘Fruitarian’ Diet: The Risks of Unbalanced Eating
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Bali when 27-year-old Karolina Krzyzak, a Polish woman, died after following a strict “fruitarian” diet. Karolina, who had traveled to the Sumberkima Hill resort in December 2024, was found in a critically malnourished state. Her story highlights the potential dangers of extreme diets and raises important questions about health and well-being.
A Disturbing Arrival at the Resort
Karolina arrived at the resort with hopes of rejuvenating and escaping to the tropical paradise. However, hotel staff were immediately concerned about her fragile appearance. Described as “emaciated” with noticeable sunken eyes and a visible collarbone, Karolina was so weak that she had to be carried to her room by a hotel clerk. Despite her poor health, Karolina refused medical assistance, even when urged to seek help by the hotel staff.

The Impact of the ‘Fruitarian’ Diet
Karolina had adopted a fruitarian diet—a type of veganism where the main source of food is fruit, and sometimes supplemented with seeds and nuts. Although some may view it as a natural, healthy lifestyle, dietitians warn that this approach is not sustainable.
Dietician Melanie Rogers emphasized that fruitarianism can severely lack essential nutrients, particularly proteins, fats, and omega-3s, which the body requires to function properly. Karolina’s extreme diet led to her malnourished state, where she weighed only three-and-a-half stone at the time of her tragic passing.
While fruits in moderation can contribute to a healthy diet, experts advise that fruit should make up no more than 25 to 30 percent of one’s daily intake to avoid malnutrition.
Health Risks and Warnings
Registered dietitian Kate Patton from Cleveland Clinic stated that the fruitarian diet is often linked with a high risk of malnourishment. While it may lead to weight loss, it’s often accompanied by muscle loss, which can be detrimental to health in the long run.
Unfortunately, Karolina’s diet led to severe health complications. Despite her declining health, hotel staff continued to provide her with only fruit, which further worsened her condition.

Tragic Discovery and Final Moments
As Karolina’s health deteriorated, hotel staff noticed her struggling even to turn over in her bed. Her situation became critical when a concerned friend, who had traveled with Karolina earlier, contacted the hotel after not hearing from her for days. Upon entering her room, staff found Karolina unresponsive and stiff, lying motionless on the floor. Tragically, she had passed away from complications related to her extreme diet.
Is Fruitarianism Really Safe?
Fruitarianism, though popular among some health enthusiasts, has sparked significant concern from health professionals due to its potential to cause severe malnutrition. Experts agree that a well-rounded diet—including protein, fats, and essential vitamins—is crucial for maintaining good health.
