Eric Dane’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, opens up about the emotional toll of his ALS diagnosis on their family and children
Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, shocked fans earlier this year when he publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)—a progressive and fatal disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Now, his wife Rebecca Gayheart has opened up about the emotional impact this diagnosis has had on their family, especially on their two daughters: Billie (15) and Georgia (13).
Speaking at the Step Up 2025 Inspiration Awards, Rebecca gave an emotional update:
“It’s heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we’re just trying to get through it.”
She added that the family is doing their best to adjust to what she calls their “new normal.” With the help of professional therapists, they are learning how to face this devastating journey together.
“We have some professional therapists who are helping us, and we’re just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace, and love,” she said.

🧠 What Is ALS?
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, slowly robs a person of their ability to move, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. There is currently no known cure, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is just three to five years, according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
🗣️ Dane’s First Symptoms: “It Started With My Right Hand”
Back in June, Dane appeared on Good Morning America and described the earliest signs that led him to seek help.
“I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand,” he recalled. “I thought maybe I had been texting too much or my hand was just fatigued.”
But the weakness worsened, and after visits to multiple specialists, he finally received the life-altering diagnosis.
“I have one functioning arm now. My right side has completely stopped working. My left arm is going too… I feel like in a few months, I might not have the use of that either,” the 52-year-old actor said.
“It is sobering.”

🧡 Family Holding On to Hope
Despite the heavy emotional weight of the diagnosis, Rebecca says they’re clinging to hope and cherishing time together.
“We’re doing our best to live with dignity and grace.”
Their story has touched fans around the world, especially those who know someone battling ALS.
