A first-grade student saved their mother from a violent situation by passing a secret note to the school bus driver. Full story of courage and survival
In a moment of pure bravery, a first-grade student in Iowa is being hailed a hero for helping rescue their mother from a life-threatening situation at home.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the young child took action early on the morning of September 24, just before 7:30 a.m., while boarding the school bus for another regular day at Sumner-Fredericksburg School.
But this day would be far from normal.
📝 A Simple, Powerful Message: “Call 911”
As they got on the bus, the student quietly handed the driver a note. The message written on it was clear and urgent:
“Call 911.”

The driver didn’t hesitate. Minutes later, deputies were dispatched to the child’s rural home in Westgate, Iowa.
There, they found the child’s mother being held against her will by a man later identified as Glenroy Stefand Miller, age 29.
⚠️ A Night of Violence Uncovered
Investigators say Miller had assaulted the woman throughout the night, causing severe injuries. She had two broken ribs and a punctured lung. At one point, Miller reportedly held a knife to her throat and wrists, threatening her life.
The woman had managed to write the note while Miller wasn’t looking and gave it to her child—trusting them with her life.
“At one point Miller started to take her to the hospital,” the sheriff’s department said, “but turned around, realizing he would go to jail.”
Instead, he forced her to stay home and continued the abuse.
👮 Charges and Investigation
Glenroy Miller was arrested and now faces multiple serious charges:
Domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury
Willful injury causing serious injury
Kidnapping in the 2nd degree with a weapon

Obstruction of emergency communication
Public records show Miller is also being held on a $1,500 bond and has been detained by ICE due to his Bahamas nationality.
👏 A Child’s Courage Saves a Life
The Sheriff’s Office shared the story on Facebook and praised the child’s quick thinking and calmness under pressure.
“This young student did something truly courageous,” they said. “Their actions helped save a life.”
No names have been released to protect the family’s privacy.
