Leonardo DiCaprio shares that the famous quaalude scene in The Wolf of Wall Street took three to four days to film, much longer than he initially expected. Discover more behind the scenes of this iconic moment in film history.

When it comes to unforgettable scenes in film, few are as iconic as Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of a drugged-out stockbroker in The Wolf of Wall Street. The 2013 dark comedy, directed by Martin Scorsese, follows the rise and fall of real-life stockbroker Jordan Belfort, played by DiCaprio.

One of the most memorable moments is when DiCaprio’s character, high on quaaludes, attempts to navigate down some stairs to his car. This chaotic, laugh-out-loud sequence became a fan favorite, but DiCaprio recently revealed that filming the scene was no easy feat.

The Long Days of Filming the Quaalude Scene

In a recent interview on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, DiCaprio discussed the famous scene, admitting that it took “three or four days” to film. Initially, he thought the scene would take only a few shots, but Scorsese had other plans.

“I thought it was a couple shots, but [Martin Scorsese] had 50 shots of me crawling around, up and down the stairs, falling, getting in the car,” DiCaprio explained. The actor had to embody the effects of quaaludes, making every fall and stumble look as realistic as possible.

The scene became an essential part of the film, but DiCaprio’s commitment to getting it just right shows the level of detail that went into creating this now-iconic moment in cinema.

DiCaprio and Belfort’s “Drugged Out” Preparation

To make the scene even more authentic, DiCaprio received help from the real-life Jordan Belfort, who himself demonstrated how to act under the influence of quaaludes. According to DiCaprio, “I showed him what it looks and feels like when you are high on quaaludes,” Belfort recalled, adding that the two spent time crawling around the floor to perfect the movement.

Despite the hilarity of the scene, DiCaprio wasn’t expecting to be on the floor for as long as he was. “I didn’t know when I was shooting it but we were there for three or four days,” he shared, admitting that the whole process took much longer than he’d anticipated.

From Stage Name to Global Stardom

In another part of the podcast, DiCaprio opened up about nearly having to take a stage name early in his career. When he first signed with an agent, they suggested he change his name to “Lenny Williams” because his real name was “too ethnic.” Fortunately, DiCaprio’s father intervened, insisting that his son be known by his birth-given name, and the rest is history.
