President Donald Trump is facing widespread criticism after his administration pulled millions of dollars in education funding from Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
The decision centers on two hot-button issues: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and transgender student rights.
$8 Million Pulled From Chicago Schools
CPS was expecting around $8 million through the federal Magnet Schools Assistance Program. However, the Trump Administration blocked the money, claiming that CPS refused to scrap the Black Student Success Plan and also failed to ban transgender students from using bathrooms and sports teams that match their gender identity.
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights argued that the Black Student Success Plan discriminates against students of other races, citing the Supreme Court’s recent decision striking down affirmative action in college admissions.
What the Programs Do
The Black Student Success Plan works to:
Recruit more Black male teachers.
Expand Black history and culture in the curriculum.
Reduce expulsions and disciplinary actions against Black students.
At the same time, CPS has statewide requirements to protect transgender students, allowing them to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams based on their gender identity. These protections clash with the Trump administration’s push to reverse such policies.
Critics Call It a “Culture War”
The decision has sparked outrage online, with many saying students are being punished for politics.
One person on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “That’s less education policy and more straight-up culture war with kids caught in the crossfire.”
Another mocked: “Trump cutting school funds like it’s a reality show elimination… drama first, students second.”
A third added: “Funding schools based on bathroom policies? That’s not how you fix education.”
CPS Pushes Back
CPS officials insist their policies are required under Illinois state law and say federal threats are putting vulnerable students at risk.
Mila Koumpilova, senior reporter at Chalkbeat Chicago, explained:
“The district’s guidelines, which allow transgender students to use facilities matching their gender identity, are in line with state law. But the Trump administration insists the district scrap these guidelines.”
For now, Chicago schools remain caught between state protections and federal threats of funding cuts, leaving teachers, parents, and students uncertain about the future.
