Glen Powell is facing backlash and support from fans after some believed he may have mocked the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk during a recent podcast appearance.

On the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, Powell opened up about an encounter with a “toxic” celebrity at a Hollywood party. During the conversation, Powell recounted a moment when he met a celebrity who had been involved in a public scandal. The celebrity, who had been “canceled” for past actions, was apparently unaware that Powell was hesitant about taking a photo together due to the individual’s controversial reputation.

Powell shared: “I was at a party and there was somebody that had basically been on the ropes in terms of sort of getting canceled… I was a fan of their work, but not a fan of their choices. When they wanted a picture, I realized very quickly it wasn’t a good idea.”

He continued, revealing his feelings about the celebrity’s public image: “He clearly clocked that I was like, ‘Oh, this is probably not a good idea.’ And I realized this guy, his face is toxic, you know? People are having a visceral reaction to this person in terms of the bad choices they’ve made.”

Powell then drew a comparison between this celebrity and the character he plays in his new show, Chad Powers. In the show, Powell portrays Russ Holliday, a man who made a mistake but is not a “bad guy” — a stark contrast to individuals who are deemed irredeemable after being publicly “canceled.”

“What I found to be really interesting is that in today’s day and age… some of these other people that get canceled… they should lie where they’re shot. But with Russ, he made a mistake, acted poorly about it, and the world kind of didn’t forgive him,” Powell said.

The Charlie Kirk Controversy

Some listeners quickly speculated that Powell’s comments may have been directed at Charlie Kirk, the political activist who was shot during a September 10 speech at a university in Utah. The suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, faces charges of aggravated murder. Some fans of Powell took issue with the actor’s comment, interpreting it as insensitive and inappropriate, particularly given the timing and context of Kirk’s shooting.

One critic online wrote: “I am no longer looking forward to Running Man and will never spend a dime on anything containing Glen Powell.” Another commenter added: “Yeah, it’s the smirk and giggle afterwards that does it. If they didn’t do that and moved on, I would have said it had nothing to do with Kirk.”

However, not everyone agreed with the backlash. Some fans defended Powell, suggesting that the phrase “lie where you’re shot” is a common expression, and that Powell was likely not referencing Kirk. One fan responded: “Lie where you’re shot is being used as a saying,” while another added: “So we have a vague phrase coming out of his mouth with no context of what he’s talking about and you assume the worst?”
