Emma Watson breaks her silence on the ongoing tension with JK Rowling, discussing their differing views on transgender issues and expressing love for the author despite their disagreement.
Emma Watson has finally spoken out about the ongoing tension with her Harry Potter co-star JK Rowling after a public fallout over comments Rowling made about the transgender community. While the British author’s remarks on the subject have caused a stir, Watson explained that despite their differences, she still cherishes her personal experiences with Rowling.
The controversy started in 2020 when JK Rowling sparked backlash after criticizing an article that used the term “people who menstruate” instead of referring to women directly. This led to heated debates, with Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint expressing their support for transgender rights. Rowling’s response was pointed, stating that she would “never forgive” the actors for “cosying up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights.”

In a recent episode of Jay Shetty’s podcast, Emma Watson addressed the situation, saying that while she doesn’t share Rowling’s views, it doesn’t erase the positive relationship they had in the past. “I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson explained.
She continued, “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish. I just don’t think these things are either/or.”
Watson also expressed her hope that despite their differences, mutual love and respect could be maintained, even when opinions don’t align. “I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” she added.

During the podcast, Watson also addressed another recent headline about her—her six-month driving ban. The actress discussed how the incident became worldwide news, and how the shame she felt was magnified by the public’s attention. She explained that her movie career and limited driving experience contributed to the situation.
“When you work on movies, they literally will not insure you to drive yourself to work. I’ve asked so many times,” Watson revealed. She explained that due to her busy schedule, she was often chauffeured to sets, and when she eventually started driving more regularly, her lack of experience showed. “So I went from basically only driving myself on weekends or during a holiday, to then, when I became a student, driving myself all the time and I did not have the experience, or skills clearly, which I now will and do.”
Despite these challenges, Watson remains open to personal growth and learning from her experiences.
