Donald Trump’s shift on Ukraine policy comes after a Russian ally’s shocking nuclear threat. Trump now backs Ukraine regaining its original borders, citing Russia’s economic struggles and NATO support.

Former President Donald Trump has changed his position on the Ukraine war, signaling a shift in his views just as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin made shocking nuclear threats. This new stance could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Trump’s public shift came in a Truth Social post, where he surprised many by stating that Ukraine could “win all of Ukraine back in its original form.” The post suggested that Ukraine could regain its territory with the help of Europe and NATO. This announcement comes after Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23.

In his post, Trump revealed that he had changed his mind about Ukraine after fully understanding the military and economic situation between Ukraine and Russia. He remarked, “Putin and Russia are in BIG economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act.” His comments follow briefings from US officials who advised him to adopt a stronger stance against Putin’s regime.

The Wall Street Journal reported that during his meeting with Zelenskyy at the UN, Trump was also briefed by intelligence officials about Russia’s limited progress in recent months. The situation on the ground has been dire for Russia, with only small territorial gains. Trump, however, remained cautious, ensuring that US weapons would not target Russian soil, a position that diverges from his past statements.

Earlier in February, Trump had told Zelenskyy that Ukraine could not win the war, saying, “You don’t have the cards right now.” However, Trump’s recent comments indicate a notable shift, now expressing confidence that Ukraine can reclaim its borders with NATO’s assistance.

Trump’s change in perspective comes amid alarming statements from Russian propagandists. Vladimir Solovyov, a leading ally of Putin, recently called for the use of nuclear weapons on the UK. On his state-run TV show, Solovyov suggested that dropping two nuclear bombs on cities like Oxford and Cambridge would send a strong message to the world about Russia’s nuclear capabilities. The rhetoric surrounding potential nuclear warfare has escalated in recent months, raising concerns across Europe and the US.

Trump’s defense of Ukraine included harsh words for Russia, calling it a “paper tiger” and criticizing the country’s inability to win the war quickly. “Why not?” he asked, referencing the length of the war, and noting that a “real military power” should have defeated Ukraine in less than a week. In response to this, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the “paper tiger” comment, asserting that Russia is “not a tiger but a bear” — symbolizing strength, not weakness.

Trump’s new position could reshape the US’s approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly as tensions with Russia continue to escalate. The situation remains fluid, with global attention focused on whether this shift will lead to increased military support for Ukraine or if it will prompt further confrontations with Russia.
