Prince William and Kate Middleton surprised fans by holding hands during a state banquet for Donald and Melania Trump’s UK visit. Here’s why the royal couple rarely shows affection in public.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are admired worldwide for their grace, duty, and elegance. But this week, during a state banquet for Donald and Melania Trump’s UK visit, the royal couple surprised fans by sharing a rare intimate moment: they held hands.
A Busy Week for the Royals
The week began with the couple welcoming the Trumps at Windsor Castle, standing alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla as part of the official state visit. Later that evening, they attended a grand banquet, dressed in stunning formal attire.
Photos from the night, shared on the couple’s official Instagram account, revealed the special moment that quickly caught attention — William and Kate holding hands, something the pair almost never do in public.
Why the Royals Rarely Hold Hands
Royal watchers know that public displays of affection between senior royals are extremely rare. According to body language expert Darren Stanton, the choice is “all to do with protocol.”
He explained:
“As the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate follow the traditions of the late Queen. It’s not considered appropriate for senior royals to be openly affectionate at official events.”
Unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who often hold hands in public, William and Kate typically follow more traditional royal etiquette.
Affection Shown in Different Ways
Even without hand-holding, their affection is clear. Stanton noted that the couple express love and support through eye contact, smiles, and small touches.
“Kate is often seen looking deeply into William’s eyes, showing trust and connection. They also use small back touches to reassure each other during outings. These gestures appear genuine and natural.”
A Moment Fans Cherished
While it may have been a small gesture, the photo of William and Kate holding hands resonated deeply with fans, who loved seeing the future King and Queen share such a personal and affectionate moment in public.
