16-year-old Bryce Brooks drowned while rescuing four children from strong Florida currents. His family calls him a hero and honors his legacy through a foundation.
A Georgia teenager is being remembered as a hero after sacrificing his life to save four children from powerful ocean currents.
In April 2023, 16-year-old Bryce Brooks from Atlanta was on vacation in Pensacola, Florida, with his family when he spotted several younger children caught in dangerous rip currents.
Without hesitation, Bryce jumped into the water to help, alongside two friends.

A Selfless Act of Courage
Speaking at a news conference, Bryce’s father, Shivy Brooks, explained:
“Our son Bryce, while being pulled by currents himself, literally called for help — but not for himself. He was calling for help for the little kids he was looking out for.”
Tragically, Bryce was pulled under in the area where no lifeguards were present, despite warning flags being issued for moderate currents.

Bryce and family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II were both airlifted to a hospital, but neither survived. Bryce later died from cardiac arrest.
Family’s Heartbreak and Pride
On social media, Bryce’s father shared his pain:
“I never would have imagined waking up to RIP posts with my child’s picture attached to them… Our baby.”

Despite the unbearable grief, Shivy said he was deeply proud of his son:
“The selflessness it takes for someone to make such a sacrifice — to do so at only the age of 16 — we’re so proud as parents. Bryce is a hero. He literally saved the lives of four kids at the expense of his own.”
His mother, Crystal, added:
“It doesn’t take away an ounce of pain, but it makes me proud of what he sacrificed. And I’ll forever hold that.”

“Uncle Chuck,” who also lost his life trying to save Bryce, was remembered as a loving husband and father of three.
Honoring His Legacy
In the months following Bryce’s death, the family created the Bryce Brooks Foundation, dedicated to water safety and drowning prevention.

The charity provides free swimming lessons for adults and children, as well as scholarships for teens to become certified lifeguards. It has already awarded six scholarships to help with college expenses, including one to Johnson’s son.
Shivy recently shared another emotional tribute:
“Bryce’s presence is missed evermore… I just want to put my arms around him. I just want my son to come home.”
Though his life was cut tragically short, Bryce’s legacy lives on as a true hero who gave everything to protect others.
