Amanda Seyfried responds to backlash over her comments on Charlie Kirk’s assassination, saying her words were taken out of context and condemning violence.
Amanda Seyfried has clarified her comments following the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk, after facing backlash online.
The Mamma Mia! and Mean Girls star, 39, came under fire after she called Kirk “hateful” in a social media comment shortly after news broke that he was killed during a Turning Point USA event on September 10.
Authorities later arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, who now faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder and witness tampering.
Seyfried initially reacted by posting a comment on Instagram about Kirk’s controversial political stances, including his views on abortion, immigration, and LGBTQ+ rights. She also reshared a quote on her account that read:
“You can’t invite violence to the dinner table and be shocked when it starts eating.”
Many people interpreted the post as a reference to Kirk’s death, sparking criticism online.

Amanda Seyfried Responds
On Instagram, Seyfried posted a statement to explain her words:
“I don’t want to add fuel to a fire. I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse — isn’t that what we should be having?”
She continued by condemning the violence, saying:
*”We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity. I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.
No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”*

Other Celebrities Face Criticism Too
Seyfried isn’t the only celebrity to face backlash after Kirk’s death.
Actor Michael Keaton commented on the “irony” of Kirk being shot despite his opposition to gun control, while still acknowledging the tragedy:
“Regardless of how I disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife. Shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable.”
Meanwhile, Ava Raine — daughter of WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — also stirred controversy after posting a message online that some linked to Kirk’s death.
As public reactions continue, Seyfried’s clarification highlights the importance of nuance, compassion, and a reminder that violence leaves lasting scars on families and communities.
