President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania attended the Pentagon 9/11 ceremony, just a day after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Trump ordered flags at half-staff and announced Kirk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

At the Pentagon’s solemn 24th anniversary remembrance of 9/11, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump joined Americans in honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the 2001 terror attacks.

The ceremony, held in Arlington, Virginia, carried an added weight of grief, coming just one day after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA.
Emotional Tribute at the Pentagon

Inside the Pentagon courtyard and at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, the Trumps stood in silence with fellow dignitaries. Cameras captured them reading a handwritten note during the service, with many viewers convinced they were holding back tears.

Social media flooded with reactions:
“Melania looks like she’s been crying 💔.”
“Trump looks distraught and in disbelief.”
“The grief in their eyes is devastating.”

One person wrote on Facebook: “His face says everything. They both look heartbroken.”
Honoring Charlie Kirk
The tragedy of Kirk’s assassination on September 10 cast a shadow over the event. Just hours after Kirk’s death, Trump issued a Presidential Proclamation ordering flags flown at half-staff across federal properties until September 14, 2025.

“As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds,” Trump declared.
He described Kirk as “a giant of his generation, a Champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions.” Trump also extended condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children, promising Kirk would be remembered.
Medal of Freedom Announcement

In a further tribute, Trump announced that Charlie Kirk will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
“We will have a very big crowd,” Trump vowed, promising a historic ceremony in Kirk’s honor.
A Nation in Grief
The Pentagon appearance highlighted a double burden of mourning — the historic tragedy of 9/11 and the recent violent loss of Charlie Kirk. For many, the moment symbolized the enduring pain of past attacks and the fresh wound left by Kirk’s death.
