The FBI detailed how a family tip led to the arrest of Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University.
The FBI has disclosed new details about how they arrested the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk during his speech at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, a conservative commentator and father-of-two, was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at a Turning Point USA event. After a two-day manhunt, authorities confirmed that Tyler Robinson, 22, was taken into custody.
Governor Cox: “We Got Him”
At a press conference on September 12, Utah Governor Spencer Cox opened with a simple but powerful statement:
“We got him.”

He went on to thank the FBI, law enforcement, and especially the suspect’s family for stepping forward with critical information.
Family Tip Led to Breakthrough
According to officials, the capture was made possible by a family member of Robinson, who reached out to a family friend. That friend then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, relaying that Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the shooting.
Investigators also learned from relatives that Robinson had grown “more political” in recent years and had openly criticized Kirk. At one family dinner, he mentioned Kirk’s upcoming event at UVU and spoke negatively about his views.
Surveillance and Clothing Evidence
Surveillance footage further tied Robinson to the crime. Video showed him arriving in a Dodge Challenger at around 8:29 a.m. on the morning of the shooting. He was seen wearing:

A plain maroon t-shirt
Light-colored shorts
A black hat with a white logo
Light-colored shoes
When FBI agents confronted Robinson on September 12, he was found wearing clothing consistent with that same description.
Thanks and Justice Ahead
Governor Cox praised Robinson’s family for their courage in tipping off law enforcement, calling it “the right thing.” He also extended his condolences to Kirk’s loved ones:
“I especially want to thank the family of Charlie Kirk. I want us to be thinking of them as we bring justice to this case.”
The FBI has said that although Robinson is in custody, the investigation will continue as they follow up on additional leads.
