NBC analyst Matthew Dowd has been fired after making “insensitive” comments about Charlie Kirk following his assassination at Utah Valley University. MSNBC issued a public apology.
Charlie Kirk’s Tragic Death
The United States remains in shock after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA.
Kirk was shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University and later died from his injuries. Former President Donald Trump confirmed the news, calling Kirk “The Great, and even Legendary”, and ordered flags across the nation lowered to half-mast in his honor.
Trump praised Kirk as someone who “understood the heart of America’s youth better than anyone” and expressed condolences to his wife, Erika, and their family.

MSNBC Coverage Sparks Controversy
In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, major news networks covered the tragedy. During MSNBC’s coverage, political analyst Matthew Dowd made remarks that quickly caused outrage.
Speaking with host Katy Tur, Dowd described Kirk as “one of the most divisive young figures”, accusing him of pushing hate-filled rhetoric. He added:
“Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions… that’s the environment we are in.”
Backlash and Termination
Dowd’s comments sparked immediate backlash online. Many accused him of appearing to justify political violence, with one user calling his remarks “unhinged” and another branding them “the most disgusting thing ever said on MSNBC.”
Public criticism quickly grew, with social media users demanding his removal. According to reports, MSNBC has since confirmed that Dowd has been fired.
Truly an unhinged rant from a lefty lunatic. Imagine saying somebody basically deserves to get murdered for their political beliefs just cause you don’t agree with him.

MSNBC Issues Apology
MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler released a statement apologizing for the analyst’s words:
“During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”
National Conversation on Media Responsibility
The incident has ignited fresh debate about the responsibility of media commentators during times of tragedy. While Dowd has since apologized, many argue that such remarks highlight the dangers of divisive rhetoric in a deeply polarized political climate.
For now, MSNBC has cut ties with the analyst as the nation continues to mourn the loss of Charlie Kirk.
