On August 22, Zarutska was riding the CATS Blue Line train when she was fatally stabbed in what appeared to be a random attack. Surveillance footage shows her boarding the train, sitting quietly with her headphones on.

Police later arrested Decarlos Brown Jr., who was found at the next stop just minutes after the attack. Witnesses say passengers rushed to help Zarutska, but she tragically died from her injuries.

Charges Against the Suspect

Brown now faces first-degree murder charges, as well as a federal charge of causing death on a mass transportation system, which carries the possibility of the death penalty.

Florida’s former Attorney General Pam Bondi stated:

“Iryna Zarutska was a young woman living the American dream – her horrific murder is a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence.”

“My prayers remain with her loved ones as they continue to grieve. Like so many of you, I’m heartbroken – and I remain committed to ensuring Charlotte is a place where everyone feels safe.”
