The mother of 23-year-old British student Mia O’Brien, jailed for life in Dubai on drug charges, makes a desperate plea to the public for support.
Mother’s Heartbreaking Plea for Jailed Daughter in Dubai
A mother’s desperate plea has captured attention after her daughter, Mia O’Brien, a 23-year-old British law student, was sentenced to life in prison in Dubai.
Mia was arrested in October 2024 after authorities reportedly found 50 grams of cocaine in her possession. On July 25, 2025, she faced trial, which lasted only one day, before being convicted and transferred to Al-Awir prison, often referred to as Dubai’s “Alcatraz.”
“I Haven’t Seen My Daughter Since Last October”
Mia’s mother, Danielle McKenna, 46, described her devastation in an emotional post.
“As her mother, I am absolutely devastated. I haven’t seen my daughter since last October.”
Danielle shared that Mia had always been a “good girl” and a dedicated law student, but admitted her daughter made a “very stupid mistake” after falling in with the wrong friends.

Fundraising Removed by GoFundMe
To cover legal fees and family travel costs, Danielle launched a fundraiser. She explained the money would go towards helping Mia, paying lawyers, and possibly visiting her in Dubai.
But the page was later removed by GoFundMe, which cited violations of its policies against raising funds for legal defense in certain cases.
Frustrated, Danielle turned to Facebook, writing:
“I am going to set up my own, as they [GoFundMe] are nitpicking at everything… I would just like to thank everyone.”
She also shared her bank details directly with supporters.
25-Year Sentence and Heavy Fine
Mia, along with a friend and the friend’s boyfriend, was arrested under suspicion of drug dealing—a charge that carries severe punishments in the UAE.
The court handed Mia a 25-year sentence and fined her nearly $27,000.

“Mum, Please Forgive Me”
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Danielle revealed her daughter’s emotional state:
“She was crying on the phone and saying, ‘Oh mum – please forgive me.’”
Danielle insisted Mia had no intention of selling drugs or smuggling them, and that she was simply caught in a terrible situation.
A Family Left Broken
The case has left Danielle and her family in shock, struggling to cope with the harsh reality of Dubai’s justice system.
Her plea is not just for donations, but for compassion and awareness of her daughter’s suffering.
