Trump called the stabbing death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska “horrible” but admitted he hadn’t heard of the case until asked. The 23-year-old was killed in a random attack on a Charlotte train.
A Shocking Crime on a Charlotte Train
On August 22, 2025, tragedy struck on the CATS Blue Line in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who fled the war with her family, was riding the train when she was randomly attacked. Surveillance footage shows her quietly sitting, looking at her phone and listening to music, when suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. suddenly stabbed her in the neck without provocation.
Zarutska died at the scene.
Brown, who has a criminal history and mental health issues, was arrested shortly after and charged with first-degree murder. He was denied bond on August 29 and ordered to undergo a competency evaluation. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 19, 2025.
Trump’s Surprising Response
When asked about the crime at Joint Base Andrews on September 7, President Donald Trump responded:
“It’s horrible.”
But his next comment left many surprised:
“I haven’t heard … when did this happen? I’ll know all about it by tomorrow morning.”

The remark drew criticism, as more than two weeks had passed since the killing. Trump promised to receive a full briefing.
Remembering Iryna Zarutska
Zarutska’s obituary described her as a “gifted and passionate artist” who often gave her artwork to friends and family.
She had dreams of becoming a veterinary assistant, was learning to drive, and cherished both adventure and quiet time at home with loved ones.
Her death has devastated her family, who fled Ukraine seeking safety and a new beginning in the U.S.
Community Reactions
The release of the train footage by CATS on September 5 brought renewed attention and grief to the case.
Social media users expressed outrage over the randomness of the attack, calls for improved passenger safety, and empathy for Zarutska’s grieving family.
