The Start of an Unexpected Medical Crisis
On August 24, 2023, Wolaver received 104 units of Botox targeting her forehead, crow’s feet, and the lines between her eyebrows. That evening, after the appointment, she developed a severe headache and went to bed, hoping the pain would subside. But by the next morning, she was unable to walk or speak.

Confused and frightened, Wolaver rushed to the emergency room, where doctors conducted a CT scan but found no abnormalities. She was diagnosed with a migraine and sent home, but her symptoms persisted. Over the next few days, Wolaver struggled with dizziness, weakness, and an inability to perform daily tasks. Her husband took over caring for their three children as doctors continued to search for answers.

A Frustrating Search for Answers
Despite undergoing multiple tests and visits to various specialists, Wolaver’s symptoms remained unexplained. Doctors first suspected a stroke, performing several MRIs, but the scans revealed evidence of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), or mini-strokes, without a clear cause. Further tests, including a spinal tap and heart monitoring, yielded no conclusive answers.

The testing process, which stretched over two years, left Wolaver feeling frustrated and helpless. “I felt like a medical experiment,” she later said. “I could hardly remember how I got through those first months.”

Discovering the Cause: Iatrogenic Botulism
After months of medical uncertainty, Wolaver took matters into her own hands. She began researching her symptoms and connecting with online support groups. It was there that she discovered others had experienced similar symptoms after receiving Botox, Dysport, and other cosmetic injections. These individuals described dizziness, facial paralysis, brain fog, and muscle weakness—symptoms that mirrored Wolaver’s experience.

@amandawolaver Ready to heal from my insane health story over the last 2 years. 🙏 I had a cervical procedure after being diagnosed with grade 2 precervical cancer. They got all the abnormal cells! Feeling so grateful for early detection, amazing doctors, and this next chapter of healing. Ladies, please don’t skip your checkups. Your health matters. Convinced her condition was linked to the Botox treatment, Wolaver returned to her doctors, requesting more tests. She also pursued private medical testing, spending $29,000 to uncover the truth. The results confirmed her suspicion: Wolaver was suffering from iatrogenic botulism, a rare but serious complication of cosmetic injections.

Understanding Iatrogenic Botulism
Iatrogenic botulism occurs when the botulinum toxins used in Botox and other injectable treatments spread beyond the injection site, affecting the nervous system. This condition can cause symptoms such as facial paralysis, dizziness, brain fog, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, neurological damage.

Botulinum toxin, which is used in Botox and Dysport, is a purified form of the same neurotoxin that causes botulism, a rare illness typically linked to foodborne contamination. Though Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved for cosmetic use, iatrogenic botulism remains an extremely rare side effect. In Wolaver’s case, the toxin traveled through her body, causing multiple mini-strokes and leaving her with long-term symptoms.

A Slow and Ongoing Recovery
Since receiving her diagnosis, Wolaver has made significant lifestyle changes to support her recovery. She overhauled her diet, cutting out caffeine and soda, and took steps to detoxify her body. She also opted to have her breast implants removed, believing this would help her healing process.

Despite her efforts, Wolaver’s recovery has been slow. Two years later, she still experiences lingering effects from the botulism, including fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty walking. She described the recovery journey as a long road with no immediate relief in sight, but she remains hopeful and focused on healing.

Raising Awareness and Speaking Out
Determined to help others avoid a similar experience, Wolaver turned to social media to share her journey. Through TikTok and other platforms, she has documented her symptoms, diagnosis, and recovery process, aiming to raise awareness about the potential risks of cosmetic procedures.

“I want people to understand that these procedures are not without risks,” Wolaver said. “I learned the cost of beauty the hard way, and I want others to know that they need to listen to their bodies and advocate for their health.”

Wolaver’s story is a stark reminder of the importance of informed decision-making when it comes to cosmetic treatments. She encourages others to research potential risks and to always be cautious when it comes to their health.

A Final Message: Health First
Wolaver’s journey has also led to other health revelations, including a successful treatment for precervical cancer. “Ladies, please don’t skip your checkups,” she urged in a TikTok update. “Your health matters.”

Today, Wolaver continues to focus on her recovery and share her story, hoping to inspire others to prioritize their well-being. “I’ll never take my health for granted again,” she said. “Beauty is not worth sacrificing your life for.”
