A UK mother pleads for help as her 23-year-old daughter faces life in a Dubai prison after a drug case. Family seeks support amid harsh conditions.
A 23-year-old British woman from Merseyside, Mia O’Brien, has been jailed for life in Dubai after authorities allegedly found her with 50 grams of cocaine. Her case has left her family devastated, with her mother, Danielle McKenna, making emotional pleas for public support.

A Mother’s Desperate Plea
Danielle first set up a fundraiser through GoFundMe to cover Mia’s legal fees and travel costs to visit her. However, the page was removed because GoFundMe prohibits raising money for legal defense in certain criminal cases.
Now, Danielle is trying to raise money directly, sharing her own bank details on social media. In her heartfelt message, she wrote:
“I haven’t seen my daughter since last October. Mia is only 23 years old and has never done a bad thing in her life. She went to university to study law but got mixed up with the wrong friends and made a very stupid mistake.”
Prison Transfer and Conditions
Initially held in Dubai’s central prison, Mia has now been moved to another facility after receiving a life sentence. Reports describe the prison conditions as extremely harsh, leaving her mother worried about her well-being.

Danielle added that her daughter often breaks down during calls:
“She was crying on the phone and saying, ‘Oh mum—please forgive me.’ I don’t think she was going to sell the drugs or bring them back. Others were involved, but she has been caught up in it.”
Strict UAE Drug Laws
The case highlights the UAE’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs. According to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, possession of even the smallest amount of illegal substances can lead to prison time or heavy fines.
Drug trafficking can carry a life sentence—or even the death penalty. Authorities in the UAE also count drugs in the bloodstream as possession, making even accidental exposure a serious risk.

UK Government Involvement
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office confirmed:
“We are supporting the family of a British woman detained in the UAE and are in contact with the local authorities.”
A Young Life in Limbo
For now, Mia O’Brien remains behind bars in Dubai, while her family in the UK continues to fight for her. Danielle hopes her daughter’s story will serve as a warning to other young people about the dangers of falling into the wrong crowd abroad.
